In June 2000 I found a ship manifest for the Ship Nestorian arriving in NYC on March 9, 1849 from Liverpool. Most of my McGovern ancestors were listed on the ship manifest and stated they were from Ballinamore, County Leitrim, Ireland. A few months later I found the Tithe Applotment Survey (a Irish Census) taken in 1833 in County Leitrim, and there I found my GG Grandfather, James McGovern, living in the townland of Aghlin, next door to a James Cullen. Cullen is the surname of my GG Grandmother, Mary Cullen. Aghlin is about five miles to the west of Ballinamore.
A likely scenerio was that James McGovern was living in the town of Ballinamore until he married Mary Cullen in 1823. He then moved to Aghlin to farm. The family emigrated from Ireland during the Potato Famine.
Here is a timeline for my ancestors:
John Cullen, a younger brother of Mary Cullen, emigrates from Aghlin with his family on April 10, 1847 to NYC onboard the Ship Ellerslie. By 1850 his family was living in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Several sons moved on to San Francisco, California in the 1860's.
James and Mary (Cullen) McGovern and rest of family leave Aghlin arriving NYC March 9,1849 onboard the ship Nestorian. 1850 family living at 125 Roosevelt St. in the 4th Ward of Manhattan. 1852 two sons move to Mississippi, Bernard to Choctaw County, James to Winston County. 1860 son James also lives in Choctaw County. 1870 son John moves to Choctaw County, Mississippi from NYC. 1887 son John moves to Navarro County, Texas. 1891 son Bernard moves to Neshoba County, Mississippi around Philadelphia.
