GENESEE COUNTY HISTORY Before the arrival of the first settlers, "Genesee Count r y" was the home of the Seneca Indians. Robert Morris of Massachusetts, purchased "Genesee Count r y" in 1791 and sold it to the Holland Company, a group of Dutch bankers, on July 20, 1793. the Holland Company opened for business in 1800, the first sale was 1801, and they moved the office to Batavia when Genesee county was founded in 1802. The county was named for the indian word meaning "beautiful valley". Originally Genesee County comprised virtually all of Western New York and was divided into only four "Shires" or towns; Batavia, Northampton, Southampton, and Leicester. Gradually, parcels of land were taken from Genesee County to form other counties; Allegany Cattaraugus Chautauqua Niagara (1808), part of Livingston (1821), part of Monroe Erie Orleans (1824) and Wyoming (1841). What was left is the present Genesee County.

The day also happened to be her fifteenth birthday. She had arrived in New York on the steamship Nevada with her two younger brothers. She was presented with a ten dollar gold piece. Approximately 12 million people followed her over the next 32 years. After 1924 prospective immigrants were pre-inspected at US embassies overseas. They were inspected again at the port of arrival before leaving the ship.

After heavy losses of men on both sides during the first year of the Civil War, President Lincoln in 1862 issued a call for an additional 300,000 men. Subsequently, New York State Governor Edwin D. Morgan issued a proclamation for volunteers on 2 July 1862. Originally, the counties of Delaware, Schoharie and Schenectady were grouped to form one regiment. On 6 August 1862, a rally was held in Delhi to recruit soldiers. So strong was the fervor that Delaware county raised enough men for an entire regiment. A total of 1,409 men signed up for duty; 852 were from Delaware County. Robert S. Hughston was appointed Colonel.

COLORS: Orange and Yellow. ORIGIN: Germany.
The Frey Name In History In Germany, family surnames did not generally come into use until late in the middle ages. The name FREY is first recorded in the thirteenth century. The name FREY and it's variations, FREYE, FREI, FREYH, etc. may be classified as a surname which indicates social status. In this case, the name is derived from the word "frei" which means "free" and which indicates that the original bearer of the name was a "free-man", as opposed to the general public who were "serfs" or "bondsmen" tied to working for the lord of the manor. It is also possible that in some instances, the name may be derived from the personal name FREY, which was the name of the Norse god of marriage and fertility. As Thursday was named for Thor's day, Friday was Frey's day.
The earliest recorded bearer of the name is found in England with a reference to one Walter le Free who was recorded in 1255. Adam le Fre is recorded in 1282. Heinrich Liber was recorded in Kanstanx in 1272 where he held the position of Tax Collector. German names were originally written in Latin and "liber" in Latin means "free".

Share Data Ltd offer a special service to US residents wishing to trace their ancestors in the UK.
As you may be aware, official records of Births, Deaths and Marriages were first begun in the UK in 1837 (1855 in Scotland, 1864 in Ireland). Therefore the only way to establish family histories prior to this date is to check the individual parish records. To travel over from the States yourself, or indeed to pay a US genealogist to do it, is likely to be extremely expensive.
Share Data can check these and many other records for you, enabling us to construct a history of your family over the centuries before they emigrated to the US. The cost will depend on how far back you want us to go and how much data you can provide us to begin with. Click here to request more information.
In a recent case we were able to trace a US family back to an ancestor who had been a Royal Naval officer during the reign of Queen Anne. We were also able to provide them with a copy of his hand-written Will dated 1715.

    About Our Family Research
My great grandfather Daniel Tarara was born January 3, 1852 in the area called “Slask” around the town of Oppeln, Germany (now Opole, Poland after WWII) and came to St. Paul, Minnesota via New York in April of 1883. Daniel’s wife Barbara Kaluza, born December 4, 1852, and their first child, a daughter, Hedwig (later married Walter Zawislak) came to America one year later. Barbara’s death certificate states her father’s name only as R. Kaluza with no information about her mother. I would like to find out more information about her parents and family. Her parents would have been born between 1790-1830, probably in the area of Oppeln, Germany.
Daniel’s father’s name was Jacob Tarara. A church marriage record (in Debie, Poland) was found which states that Jacob’s marriage took place on May 27, 1844 in Ligota Turawska to Maria Sikora, the oldest daughter of Johann Sikora of Sacreu. I don’t know if Sacreu is in Poland or Germany. Jacob was the youngest son of Joseph Tarara, a gardener, residing in Bierdzany, Poland. Jacob’s brothers and sisters are unknown at this time.
Daniel had a sister, Maria Tarara. She had a son, Thomas Tarara, born January 7, 1876 in Ligota Turawaska, Poland. Thomas Tarara married Maria Tator. They had six children. (Hedwig, Marie, Adalbert, Josef, Peter Paul, and Pelagia) Maria died February 13, 1935 in Szedrzik, Poland. Thomas died November 22, 1953 in Dembio, Poland.
