Mr. Lincoln and New York
The Lincoln Institute presents a website with an interesting theme: The relationship between New York State and Abraham Lincoln. Many people have heard of the Cooper Union speech that launched Lincoln's national political career, but how many know about Lincoln meeting the little girl who suggested he grow a beard? This site is full of well-written and well-researched articles by Richard Behn, the director of the Lincoln Institute, about New York State in the Civil War years, using Lincoln as the focus. Check out the map of the Draft Riots of 1863. Click here or on the above picture of the burning of the 2nd Avenue Armory.

137th Voluntary Infantry Unit
This is a very brief history of the 137th NY. It was involved in some of the major battles during the latter part of the war in VA. The 137th New York Volunteer Infantry was organized at Binghampton, N. Y., Sept 25, 1862 with David Ireland Colonel: Koert S. Van Voorhees of Ithaca, Lieutenant-Colonel. A thousand men were raised in ten companies. Four companies were raised in Broome County, three in Tioga County and three in Tompkins County. Company H was raised from Tompkins Co. NY. Follow this link to find a roster for Company H, along with other information. Follow this link to find enlistment registers, which usually includes the soldiers age and place of enlistment. The regiment left the state, Sept 27, 1862, and travelled by rail to Frederick, MD via Elmira, Williamsport and Baltimore and Washington DC. They arrived there 12 days after the battle of Antietam. This unit fought at Chancellorville, with heavy losses. Within 8 months time of incorporation, the unit had lost 475 men to death, disease or discharges for disabilities. My own gr grandfather, Richard Hall was one of these men, leaving the unit due to a disabiling wound. He would later re-enlist in a PA unit, presumably trying to hide his earlier discharge.

Why So Valuable What Churches Existed Where New York Reformed Dutch Churches New Jersey Reformed Dutch Churches ... A Final Word One of the most valuable tools for a researcher looking for Dutch ancestors in America are the Reformed Dutch Church Records. In its infancy, this Church was referred to as the Reformed Dutch Church, but in recent times, this Church has sometimes come to be known as the Dutch Reformed Church.
Why So Valuable
What Churches Existed Where
Anytime a church record is consulted, a certain pattern is followed, whether the record is in Dutch, or has been translated into English. In English, the pattern is the date of baptism (sometimes the date of birth also), the name of the child, the names of the parents and the names of the witnesses. If the record is kept in Dutch, the same pattern is followed, only the following words are used. Kinder = Child. Ouders = parents. Geboren = Born. Gedopt = Baptized. Getuygen = Witnesses. One may ask, what church do I look for and where do I find its records? These two questions are addressed in the following two sections. Before looking at these two sections, however, here are examples of how records are kept. English Translation Example: (Schraalenburgh Reformed Dutch Church)

Prior to 1810 1880 to Present OTHER SITES
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Before 1880, New York had no consistent requirement for maintaining vital records. Generations of New Yorkers lived, worked and died without appearing in public records. Thankfully, they were recorded in the religious records of the state. Early churches were a focus of the community. Most individuals were involved at least enough to have important events such as baptisms or marriages recorded in the ecclesiastic records. The major churches kept the best available records. Land ownership for large tracts of the land in the state prior to about 1840 was in a leasehold system. This was a private arrangement between the large landholders and the leasee or renter. The information was not recorded in deeds or public land records. The lease often provided for tenancy for three lives and so the leaseholder would not have had the need to make a will or probate record. Thus many of the families in the state do not commonly appear in land records or probate records.
