Prevent Child Abuse New York's programs and services address the critical need to involve all sectors of the state's communities in preventing child abuse. Our programs begin with the needs of the child, the family, and the community they live in. They expand to the human services and volunteer community that supports children and families. And they reach out to the public officials and policy makers who have ultimate responsibility to assure that every child has a protected childhood in safe communities. A Head Start Right From the Beginning
This innovative program in the Rockaway community of Queens takes its name seriously. Here an early head start in child development can begin as early as the womb. The emphasis is on teen families and their children up to three years of age, though pregnant women up to age 25 are also accepted. The program serves 75 children with 32 in the Early Steps Family Center, 16 in LYFE (Living for the Young Family through Education) and the remainder in the home or yet to be born. Teen Families in an Impoverished Community
Multi-faceted Program
EHS has many facets. For parents, education, involvement and support are emphasized. Teen mothers are encouraged to continue their education during pregnancy. The LYFE program, available in many city schools, offers services to help them stay in school after their babies are born. For parents who have dropped out of school, the center offers a GED program. Graduation rate so far? 100%. The Center is open four days a week and offers both full and half-day programs for the children. The teacher-child ratio is extremely low and all head teachers are certified. Friday mornings are devoted to staff development.

We're also sensitive to the fact that more than 56% of the city's population are foreign born or the children of foreign born. With that in mind, we have developed multicultural programs to serve New York's diverse communities.

Social Security's New York Region proudly serves the states of New Jersey and New York, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Virtually every resident in the New York Region will interact with Social Security during his or her life and we know how important our services are to those who use them. Social Security is more than a retirement program. This was especially evident in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Social Security is America's premier family protection program, paying monthly benefits to the surviving families of deceased workers and to disabled workers and their families. More than 2,300 children receive monthly Social Security benefits because they lost a parent on September 11th. We are a region of employees who strive for quality in both the programs we administer and the services we deliver. We believe in our mission of public service and continuously look at ways to improve our service to you. Service to the public is our guiding principle as we set our priorities and look at how we do the work.

Facing heart surgery, Stan Kellner thought he'd
never run his basketball camps again.
It's amazing how well he rebounded.
"Yes I Can." It's not just the name of Stan Kellner's basketball camps. It's his philosophy of life. A philosophy that was put to the supreme test during one of his morning runs. Suddenly, he felt a burning and tightness in hischest. The pain passed, but he knew he was in trouble and needed help. Everyone he spoke to recommended that he consult the specialists at the Winthrop Institute for Heart Care. Sophisticated tests revealed he had an 80% blockage in a major coronary artery. Stan needed bypasssurgery. Traditional open heart surgery would have meant opening the chest-and a long recovery. But Stan's highly-skilled cardiac surgery team recommended minimally invasive cardiac surgery. This advanced technique makes possible quicker healing and recovery. His cardiac surgeons began the delicate operation by making incisions as small as three inches. After stopping his heart, they redirected the blood flow around the arterial blockage, and Stan began what he described as a rapid, pain-free recovery.

Buffalo Parent Center:
A Large Urban School District Gives Parents a Place of Their Own
Buffalo Public Schools
Buffalo, New York
Overview
Context
Buffalo Public Schools is a large urban school district that serves about 48,000 children from birth through grade twelve. Fifty-three percent of the district's students are African American, 34 percent are white, 10 percent are Hispanic, and 3 percent are American Indian or Asian. Fifty-nine percent of its students qualify for the federal free or reduced price lunch program. The parent center operates year-round, except for school holidays. During the school year the center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; it closes one half-hour earlier during the summer. The center's Even Start Family Literacy program serves the same group of families for an entire calendar year; all other programs operate on a semester basis. Activities take place within one of three daily sessions: morning, afternoon, or evening. During morning sessions parents with young children engage in developmentally appropriate learning activities and parenting skills training. In the afternoon and evening sessions, families with older children take parent and child computer courses, and participate in tutoring and homework sessions or nonacademic classes such as art, aerobics, and music. Evenings are the busiest time, with 25 to 40 families attending the center. The center employs about 30 staff members, including 7 specialists in adult and early childhood education, 3 home liaisons employed by the Even Start program, a full-time computer teacher, and teachers from the public school system who serve as mathematics, reading, and language specialists.
