Print Home Archive Français Contact Us ... Registration Information Secretary-General Kofi Annan opened the seminar on “Confronting Islamophobia: Education for Tolerance and Understanding” at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 7 December. This seminar was the second in a series entitled “Unlearning Intolerance”, organized by the Educational Outreach Section in the Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI).
The series aims to examine different manifestations of intolerance and explore ways to promote respect and understanding among peoples. As its name suggests, the “Unlearning Intolerance” series offers opportunities to discuss how intolerance, wherever it exists and for whatever reason, can be “unlearned” through education, inclusion and example.
Part of DPI’s mission is to bring together voluntary organizations, educators and other components of civil society for discussions with the United Nations system on issues that are not just universal in their scope, but have a direct and palpable impact upon the lives of children, women and men everywhere. This series falls squarely within that effort. It also responds to a specific request to DPI from the Committee on Information (a committee of the United Nations General Assembly), asking the Department help disseminate information relevant to the “dialogue among civilizations” and the “culture of peace”.

Urgent action is needed in 2005 if we are to usher in a decade of bold ambition to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The 2005 World Summit was the largest gathering of world leaders in history. From September 14-16, more than 180 Heads of State met at the United Nations to forge an action plan for promoting international security and for achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
The final Summit outcome document provided a global endorsement of the Millennium Development Goals, and built on the major international agreements of recent years, including: the 2002 International Conference on Financing for Development in Monterrey, Mexico the 2003 G8 Summit in Evian, France "Q & A on International Commitments to the Millennium Development Goals" (August 30, 2005) Meeting the long-standing donor commitment to contribute just 70 cents of every $100 of income to the fight against poverty can generate the funding needed for developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Village' approach draws upon the leading science-based action plan to fight poverty in rural Africa and meet the Millennium Goals by 2015.

Established in 1968, this four-year, undergraduate, liberal arts college offers an appealing balance between the traditions of a Jesuit education and the innovative educational opportunity offered by its location at the cultural, artistic and commercial crossroads of Manhattan. The College maintains a solid liberal arts core curriculum with an opening to interdisciplinary study. In addition to a range of liberal arts majors, there is a special commitment to the training of students in fields such as media studies, visual arts, and theatre, a commitment underscored by new state-of-the-art facilities for these areas. Many courses incorporate resources and programming offered by the City's artistic and cultural institutions, social service agencies, and varied neighborhoods. Special programs include the EXCEL program for adults over 21, most of whom have had a break in their education, and The College at Sixty for adults over age 50.
