  • At a gathering last week at the West Village apartment of a gay rights activist, Allen Roskoff, the Reverend Al Sharpton took to the floor and launched an initiative likely to make some of his most loyal supporters uncomfortable. Rev. Sharpton has pledged to jumpstart a grassroots movement that would address the issue of homophobia in the black community. That problem has undoubtedly contributed to the epidemic rates of HIV/AIDS cases among African-Americans, particularly black women. UMCOR has received, as of September 19, $3.6 million for hurricane Katrina relief and rehabilitation from the Internet, telephone and mail. This does not include monies directed through annual conferences and GCFA From the Mississippi Conference Website Worshipping beside the ruins of Mississippi City United Methodist Church in Gulfport, Rev. Rod Dickson-Rishel led the Great Thanksgiving. The entire Mississippi Gulf Coast has experienced catastrophic damage. Our United Methodist presence in these communities is strong. Historic Gulfside Assembly was washed away, Seashore Assembly and Seashore Mission were destroyed, churches and parsonages were destroyed, flooded, damaged. There has been loss of life as persons seeking shelter in our churches perished in the storm.
In the midst of this, we know that God is with us. Out of the standing churches and ministry facilities and in parking lots, distribution of gifts lovingly offered is continuous. Thousands are sheltered and fed.
In this time of grief and loss, we give thanks for the community of United Methodist people. We welcome your thoughts, prayers, gifts, and presence with us in the weeks and years of rebuilding to come.

The release of the Arhoolie Sacred Steel CD series , which began in 1997 and totals nine albums today, created a level of national and international interest in the music that continues to increase. After only a year and a half of performing at clubs and jam band concerts, young New Jersey House of God steel guitar prodigy Robert Randolph has risen meteorically to mainstream national popularity. He recently signed a rock star-magnitude contract with Warner Brothers. The vitality of the tradition seems ensured. How the increased popularity will affect it remains to be seen.
Robert Stone mangoton@bellsouth.net ) is Outreach Coordinator for the Florida Folklife Program , a position partially funded by an Infrastructure Grant from the NEA Folk and Traditional Arts Program. He began to document the House of God steel guitar tradition in Florida in 1992 and expanded his research to other states in 1996. He has produced seven Sacred Steel CDs for Arhoolie records and directed the Sacred Steel documentary video. His current projects in documenting the tradition include a book to be published by the University of Illinois Press and a traveling photo exhibit. Photo: Judy Trotta

    St. Patrick's Cathedral New York
by Marcus Franz [franz@murray.fordham.edu] Introduction Saint Patrick's Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic archbishop of New York. is an example of the decorated and geometric style of Gothic ecclesiastical architecture which prevailed in Europe from 1275 to 1400, and of which the Cathedrals of Rheims, Amiens, and Cologne in Europe and the naves of York Minister, Exeter, and Westminster, are among the most advanced examples.
The Architecture and its Effects Originally the word Gothic was used by Italian Renaissance writers as a derogatory term for all art and architecture of the Middle Ages, which they regarded as comparable to the works of barbarian Goths. Since them, the term Gothic has become a term to describe the architectural style first appearing in Northern France in the late twelfth century. Though Saint Patrick's was built in Gothic style, its design is original and distinct. The Cathedral is noted for its purity of style, originality of design, harmony of proportions, beauty of material, and workmanship. It is existing proof that American architects and American artisans can hold their own with the architects and artisans of the Old World and that Catholics of America can raise sacred structures that captivate and cultivate the admiration of those who see it. Walking into Saint Patrick's Cathedral and the medieval cathedrals of Europe, one would find a similar atmosphere of beauty and peace. A sentence from Cardinal's Spellman's sermon on the occasion of the consecration of the High Altar in May 1942 states it well -
