About Kaplan Press Releases Kaplan in the Community Recent , Archive: New York City Board Of Education Selects Kaplan To Provide Teacher Certification Prep Citywide NEW YORK, October 18, 2001 , Kaplan, Inc. a leading provider of educational services for teachers, schools and students, announced today that it has been approved by the New York City Board of Education to provide preparation courses for the New York State teacher certification exams, a required exam for all New York State teachers. Kaplan first demonstrated its expertise last spring when the company participated in a pilot program for the Board of Education to offer teacher certification preparation courses, working with over 3,000 New York City Preparatory Provisional Teachers (PPTs) and New York City Teaching Fellows program participants. Based upon Kaplan's participation in last year's pilot program, Kaplan estimates this contract to be valued between $1- $2 million. "We're pleased to have the opportunity to expand our relationship with the New York City Board of Education by enabling teachers to successfully exhibit their skills and understanding on required certification exams," said Marc Bernstein, Ed. D., President, Kaplan K12 Learning Services. "As the national teacher shortage persists, we commend the Board of Education for taking this proactive approach to assure that all its classrooms are staffed with highly-qualified, certified teachers." Kaplan will provide courses for current PPTs to help them prepare for required exams including the LAST (Liberal Arts and Sciences Test) and ATS-W (Assessment of Teaching Skills Written). Kaplan's participation will be used to support the New York City Teaching Fellows to prepare for the exams they need in order to obtain transitional certification.

There are no words to describe the devastation and impact of Katrina on the lives of so many. People are repeatedly asking what can we do. Is NYPTA or the APTA going to coordinate any efforts? As of now, APTA is suggesting that donations be made directly to the relief agencies to aid the area most efficiently. These organizations are (C)(3)s so donations are tax deductible; not so with the APTA. [
