Off-reservation boarding schools were considered by many government and boarding school officials to be major successes in forcing Native American children to adopt the ways of white "civilization" and simultaneously to abandon their own Native traditions. Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was a school of this type, as was Sherman Institute in Riverside, California. Native children were originally brought to Carlisle as hostages to insure that their parents would not continue armed resistance against the United States Army. However, many of the first Carlisle students became ill from diseases, such as tuberculosis, and died in the school's opening years. This may be a reason for Carlisle President Richard H. Pratt's letter to a physician in 1884, requesting help in selecting "healthy children" for the school from Indian reservations in the West. This letter is displayed here. In addition to providing medical treatment to its students, Carlisle Indian School Hospital also functioned as a preliminary nurse training facility, preparing Native American women to move on to regular nursing schools, as the souvenir album here shows.

Measles Outbreak in a Boarding School - Pennsylvania, 2003
Measles has not been endemic in the United States since 1997, although limited outbreaks continue to be caused by imported* cases ( ). In 2003, CDC assisted in investigating the largest school outbreak of measles in the United States since 1998 ( ). The outbreak consisted of 11 laboratory-confirmed cases: nine cases in a boarding school in eastern Pennsylvania and two epidemiologically linked cases in New York City (NYC). This report summarizes the results of the outbreak investigation, which indicated that measles continues to be imported into the United States and that high coverage with 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) among students was effective in limiting the size of the outbreak. Health-care providers should maintain a high index of suspicion for measles, especially in those who have traveled abroad recently, and recommendations for 2 doses of MCV in all school-aged children should be followed. In April 2003, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported to CDC two cases of measles in unvaccinated twins aged 13 years in a boarding school with 663 students. Active surveillance for measles was conducted in the school, hospitals, and doctors' offices through May 2003. Patients were interviewed, acute- and convalescent-phase sera were collected for measles IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay testing, and throat swabs and urine samples were collected for viral genotyping. Efforts to control the outbreak included vaccinating or excluding from campus and isolating all students and staff members with no evidence of immunity to measles

I read the same NYT piece Wonkette did.
And the same notion crossed my mind. I do think the NYT piece was subtly constructed to plant this idea. Just look at the series of photographs they chose: young John in plaid pants, young John with his boys' school pals, young John in a wrestling suit with his fellow wrestlers, John with footballers, and the final pic John smiling in an all-male wedding photograph. The article also says Roberts married his wife when both were in their forties and that that their children were adopted.

New York City Becomes a Hot College Town
Students say they are attracted by professional and cultural opportunities By BEN GOSE NEW YORK
Theresa Oldmixon, a freshman at New York University, received an old-fashioned introduction to the Big Apple: In her first two days here, three strangers tried to sell her marijuana or speed. But the Houston native didn't let the drug dealers taint her fi rst impression of the city, even if she did find them "a little more outgoing" than their Texas counterparts. At an orientation picnic for freshmen here last month, the drama student bore a grin worthy of an audition. "When you graduate, the world is at your doorstep," she said. "This place rocks." Many other students apparently agree. New York University and most other private colleges in the city are seeing a boom in applications unmatched in much of the rest of the country. And unlike most colleges which would use such an opportunity to boa st of their superior programs colleges here acknowledge that the city itself is helping to fuel the increases. Freshman applications have more than doubled in the past six years at N.Y.U. and Barnard College, and they're up 92 per cent at Columbia University. Last year, when the number of students applying to Columbia rose 9 per cent, all other Ivy League insti tutions experienced declines.

by Peter Gambaccini Caroline Bierbaum finishes third at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.
(Both photos by Alison Wade/New York Road Runners) Bierbaum finishes ninth at the 2001 Foot Locker Northeast Regional as a high school senior. For a young woman with slim national credentials and a tardy start to the autumn season, Columbia University junior Caroline Bierbaum's third place at the NCAA Cross Championships on November 22 in Terre Haute, Indiana, was a revelation and a bit of a shock, even to her. Often reduced to a walk in her summer distance runs, Bierbaum considered bypassing the entire 2004 collegiate cross country season. But when a doctor suggested an over-the-counter medicine that elevated her low iron levels, she very soon began to work her way into shape, first testing herself in a pair of local 5K races in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Then, on October 16, while the Columbia varsity was away at "Pre-Nationals," Bierbaum won the Lafayette Invitational in Pennsylvania by 52 seconds in her collegiate first race since the previous November's ECAC Championships — in which she'd been 43rd out of 61 runners. Bierbaum continued her rise and became 2004 Heptagonal Cross Country champion, and subsequently placed fourth at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Her third place at the NCAA Championships was the highest finish ever by a Columbia athlete.

Bring on the Problems? It Must Be Math Camp
By MICHAEL WINERIP
SAN MARCOS , Texas WHEN Dr. Max Warshauer puts together his high-powered math camp for top high school students each summer, he selects several campers with perfect 1600 SAT's. "We turned away a 1570 SAT this year, because there were three stronger students at the same high school," Dr. Warshauer said. Many are like Will Nygard, who, by sophomore year, had finished Calculus 2, the toughest math course at his high school in Coronado, Calif. Will got a top score of 5 on the AP calculus test, but says, "Until math camp, I never really understood what calculus was." Dr. Warshauer needs a very bright staff to challenge such campers, and several of his counselors are math majors from M.I.T., Stanford and Harvard. Each camp day here at Southwest Texas State University is chock full of math. They start with an 8:30 a.m. lecture on numbers theory by Dr. Warshauer (instantly recognizable from his Bermuda shorts, black socks, black tie shoes and corny jokes) and finish each night with a four-hour problem-solving session that often goes past 10 p.m.

Cherry Ames, Boarding School Nurse
Book 17, by Helen Wells
Illustrated by Frank Vaughn
"... being nurse to the students ... is sort of a double assignment. It won't be so much a question of medicines and temperatures as, well, being a good psychologist." From Cherry Ames,
Boarding School Nurse
, pp. 16-17 As school nurse at a reconverted chateau, Cherry seeks a perfume formula and the fulfillment of a dead man's cherished dream.
Chapter 1: Lisette After getting off the train at Jamestown, near Hilton, where she will be the school nurse at the Jamestown School for Girls, Cherry shares a cab with a secretive early-arriving scholarship student, Lisette Gauthier Chapter 2: House of Roses Cherry meets the headmistress, Alicia Harrison , an old friend of Cherry's mother . Mrs. Harrison takes her on a brief tour of the old chateau that has been converted into a school, and introduces her to the staff and teachers.
This book marks the return of Helen Wells to the Cherry Ames series. The change in authors is probably the cause of the most jarring continuity problem in the series. The previous volume
