    What's New!
Summer '97 OK, OK. It's been a while since our last update, and Craft article. It's been busy with graduation and all. Just for your info, here's where all of us are going:
    • Chris graduated from North Shore High in Houston and will be attending the University of Texas at Austin in the fall. He's a Plan II Honors and Electrical Engineering major.
    • Roxanne also graduated from North Shore. She plans to attend San Jacinto Community college for two years and hopefully transfer to UT. She is Majoring in Musical Theatre.
    • Geoff recently graduated from Dumas High School in Dumas, Texas (its close to Amarillo). He will be attending Texas Christian University in the Fall.
Several Craft pages are lined up, and in various stages of development:
  • Peyote (Gourd) Stitch Beadwork - contributed my Mike Wright
  • Traditional Bustles Note: while making the bustle for the page, I took pictures along the way, Unfortunately, the film was overexposed and there aren't any good pictures left. I'll try to take some of the finished bustle and hope it can accurately describe the construction.
  • Men's Southern Straight Dance leggings, aprons, trailer and ribbonwork. Through a generous arrangement with American Broadcloth, we will construct a complete set. Right now, the main hold up is getting the ribbonwork completed.

Russian Christmas
Thirteen days after Western Christmas, on January 7th, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates its Christmas, in accordance with the old Julian calendar. It's a day of both solemn ritual and joyous celebration After the 1917 Revolution, Christmas was banned throughout Russia, along with other religious celebrations. It wasn't until 75 years later, in 1992, that the holiday was openly observed. Today, it's once again celebrated in grand fashion, with the faithful participating in an all-night Mass in incense-filled Cathedrals amidst the company of the painted icons of Saints. Christmas is one of the most joyous traditions for the celebration of Eve comes from the Russian tradition. On the Eve of Christmas, it is traditional for all family members to gather to share a special meal. The various foods and customs surrounding this meal differed in Holy Russia from village to village and from family to family, but certain aspects remained the same.

SUKKOT CRAFTS What is Sukkot?
Sukkot/Shmini atzeret is Oct. 17 (erev) - 24, 2005
During the holiday of Sukkot
(Feast of the Tabinacles a Fall holiday in America)
Jews are commanded to dwell, eat, sleep in a temporary shelter (Sukkah)
to remind them of the Israelites journey of 40 years in the desert. Many Jews build three sided structures in their back yards.
The roof is covered with greens or other items but allowing viewing of the stars. Many are fancy structures but just as many are barely held together.
The whole family decorates the Sukkah with art and favorite things to make the time in the sukkah pleasant. Many will try and sleep every night and eat all of their meals. (It often rains though so many people have a clear plastic over the roof to keep the rain out.) There are many special customs and prayers to make this a special time.

  • 3 pieces of construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Optional: Markers, glitter or glitter glue
Fold two pieces of construction paper in half. One piece will be the outside of the card; one piece will be the inside. On the inner card, make four short, parallel cuts along the fold line. The cuts should be in two pairs. Fold over the flaps that were formed by the cuts. Unfold the folds you just made and open up the card. Push up the flaps made by the cuts. These will hold up the numbers. Close the card so that the flaps are inside the card. Cut out large numbers (2003) from construction paper. Make sure that they will fit inside the card when it is closed. Glue them to the flaps. Close the card.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! (article first published : 2001-01-3)
artSMart wishes all readers the very best of health, peace, happiness and prosperity for the year 2001! artSMart has come a long way since its inception two years ago. Apart from general coverage on all the arts disciplines, we cover reviews of theatre productions and books as well as movies on the general circuit. Respected columnist Michael Green, former editor in chief of The Daily News and The Sunday Tribune covers what’s happening in the world of wines in his regular Michael Green’s Wine Notes . Crossword fanatic Ulysses Online talks about the vagaries of the English language in Contextually Yours . Both these contributions feature in Lifesmart, a new section that was introduced about a year ago to cover subjects that didn’t fit in any of the defined arts disciplines. Lifesmart is all about a better quality of life. It features everything from fashion and jewellery design to reviews of cookery or gardening books and occasional restaurant reviews. Keep an eye on Lifesmart, it’s full of interesting items!
