Confetti Collage Supply students with an assortment of confetti, glue and heavy paper. Encourage them to create a one-of-a-kind New Year's collage. Once projects are completed, ask each student to tell a little bit about his or her masterpiece. Create-A-Calendar As a class, study several calendars. Review the names of the days and months. Notice how some calendars list holidays or special events. Study picture calendars, and discuss how pictures reflect the various months.
Use a word processor to create a calendar form. Divide students into 12 groups. Let each group create a calendar page for one month. The group will need to place the days of the week across the top of the calendar, then number the days. Next, the group should write in any holidays during the month. To add a personal touch, add students' birthdays to the calendar as well.
After the days are numbered, the group needs to prepare a piece of artwork to go along with the month. You may wish to have each group write a simple poem about the month as well and include this somewhere in its art piece.
When all groups have finished, gather calendar sheets. Double-check students' work. Then, bind the pages into a calendar format. Display in classroom, and use throughout the new year.

Chinese New Year Festival Crafts
The New Year Festival is the most important event in the Chinese calendar. It usually takes place late January or early February. New Year's Day is traditionally followed by 15 days of festivities ending with a Lantern Festival which coincides with the appearance of the first full moon of the year. More recently, only three days are celebrated - New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and Kai Nien, the following day. The following three craft ideas are all associated with the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Peach Blossom Trees.
Peach wood is an enemy of demons, and peach signifies longevity. Attach peach colored tissue paper flowers and pale green leaves to a twig. Put the twig in Plasticine in a yogurt pot.
Paper dragon.
The dragon symbolizes bravery, energy and wisdom. Cut two narrow strips of colored paper (approx. 70-80 cms long and 4 or 5 cms wide). Glue them together at the top in a V shape. Fold alternately into a concertina. Attach a head at one end and sticks at both ends. Traditional colors for the head are red, gold and green with lots of sequins. Make your dragon dance!

One of the things that I find most important is, the more we are different, the more we are the same. The origins of these celebrations most locked in antiquity illustrates the similarities of men and women of all cultures. I put ideas for all these celebrations together, for in fact it is impossible to differentiate between them. Most of the symbols of Christmas that we treasure today all share common Pagan origins. The spirit of the holiday remains the same for all: Peace on earth, goodwill toward men, a time for re-connecting to our family and heritage, spiritual reflections, and of course, the love of feasting and celebration. Do you have any special holiday traditions that you'd like to share? We'd love to hear about them. Please post messages to the

Container ideas popcorn tin five-gallon plastic bucket new paint can from hardware store colored tin from craft stores recycled cookie tins Really, there are no limits here. Find a container that will hold your memorabilia and decorate it ( figure A Decorating ideas Cover the tin with metal paint. If you want to cover on the first coat, visit the hardware store and purchase a metal paint there. It will probably cover more easily than craft metal paints. Another option is to write on the tins with metal paint pens, or cover the tins with magazine cutouts, other paper designs and glue. Make the cutouts representative of the things inside the time capsule or of pop culture headliners of the day ( figure A ). Coat the glued-on cutout components with a heavy marine varnish to finish.

Yamaha has arranged a special package of New Year's presents such as paper craft models of a Kadomatsu, a Tiger and a Kumade. These are typical symbols seen anywhere in Japan during the New Year's season. We have also prepared the 1998 New Year's calendar.
Please follow the assembly instructions and try your hand at making Japanese paper crafts!
Kadomatsu Kadomatsu is a decoration consisting of a pair of pine trees and bamboo stems. It is placed on both sides of the front entrance of a house from January 1-7. It symbolizes that the tree provides longevity, prosperity and purity for the descent of the Gods. This custom was originally started in China around 8th Century and was later brought to Japan. The Tiger The Tiger is one of the twelve holy sings of the Chinese and Japanese zodiac, which is much different from Western astrology. It is based on a calendar that originated in ancient China and was brought to Japan around the 8th Century. By the 17th Century, it became widely common in the daily life of Japanese society. The Tiger was regarded as one of the holy animals in China.

New Year's Peace Candles Lighting lanterns, lamps, or candles for peace during New Year's celebrations is a tradition in many countries such as China, India, and Ireland. Give this tradition a personal twist by asking students to make candles that can be lit for peace in the new year. For materials, you'll need a small white candle, such as a votive; a single-hole punch; scissors; glue; markers, pens, or crayons; string, yarn, or ribbon; the Reproducible, page 17; and a paper lunch bag. From the Desk of Judi! This week's topic is: CHINESE NEW YEAR Chinese New Year is celebrated in late January to early February (depending on the year - it starts on a New Moon and ends with the lantern festival on the full moon 15 days later). In 2004, Chinese New Year is celebrated on January 22; the year 2004 is the Year of the Monkey . In the Chinese calendar, it is the year 4701.
