General Information
The School of Medicine is publicly supported and has an implied obligation to train students who are likely to serve the State's expanding medical needs. For this reason, residents of New Mexico are given primary consideration for admission to the school. The university is also a member of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Therefore, secondary consideration is given to residents of participating states that at present have no medical schools (i.e., Montana and Wyoming). WICHE applicants and residents of other states (including former New Mexico residents) must apply under the Early Decision Program (see Early Decision Program) to be given consideration for admission. New Mexico residents attending college outside the state of New Mexico who change their state of residence for tuition purposes should be cognizant of this policy.

New Mexico
A territory of the United States now (Jan., 1911) awaiting only the completion of its Constitution and the acceptance thereof by the Federal authorities to rank as a state. It lies between 31º20' and 37º N. lat., and between 103º2' and 109º2' W. long.; it is bounded on the north by Colorado , on the east by Oklahoma and Texas, on the south by Texas and the Republic of Mexico, and on the west by Arizona. It is about 370 miles from east to west, 335 from north to south, and has an area of 122,580 sq. miles, with mountain, plateau, and valley on either side of the Rio Grande. The average rainfall is 12 inches, usually between July and September, so that spring and summer are dry, and agriculture and grazing suffer. The climate is uniform, the summers, as a rule, moderate, and, the atmosphere being dry, the heat is not oppressive. In the north-west and north-east the winters are long, but not severe, while in the central and southern portions the winters are usually short and mild. In the United States census of 1900 the population was 141,282, of which 33 per cent was illiterate; in the census of 1910 the population was 327,296. About one-half of the inhabitants are of Spanish descent.

New Mexico School Update From the Editor: For some time now we have been following the situation at the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped (NMSVH). (See the October, 1996, issue of the Braille Monitor for details.) In May of this year the U.S. Justice Department finally released its report on the school. It makes discouraging, if not distressing, reading. In recent months some hopeful signs have appeared. The Board of Regents is now radically different from the one that looked the other way when the worst of the abuses were taking place. Also, beginning with the current academic year, Dr. Nell Carney, the former Commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services Administration, has taken over as superintendent at NMSVH. All this is good news, but the new broom has a lot to sweep away. The following summary of the Justice Department's report appeared in the June 24, 1998, edition of the Albuquerque Journal. Here it is: Feds Fault New Mexico School for Blind
Students Not Taught Braille, Cane Use by Rene Romo The state's primary school for the blind has failed to teach most of its students how to read Braille and walk with a cane and lacks adequate mental health services, according to a report issued recently by the U.S. Justice Department.

Things have continued to happen during the intervening months. One of the most hopeful events was that Governor Johnson appointed Jim Salas, a leader of the National Federation of the Blind, as a member of the school's board of trustees. The following three news articles, taken from two Albuquerque newspapers, are self-explanatory. Principal of Blind School Voted Out, Regents Let Boss Go After 19-Year Service

Dear New Mexican, "Massive and unprecedented" were the words used by one emergency responder to the devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina that pummeled the Gulf Coast earlier this week. The relief operation is also expected to be the largest in U.S. history. Church World Service is our ecumenical organization's sister relief agency, to rush aid to the devastated area. "We are particularly concerned about the plight of poor people, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations," said the Rev. John L. McCullough, CWS Director. McCullough and his team are on the scene today and will update us shortly.
