Tell Us Your Story
Since 2000, studies on the impact of school libraries and librarians on academic achievement have been conducted in Colorado and more than a dozen other states. Have you used one or more of these studies as an advocate for school libraries and librarians? If so, we would appreciate hearing from you in a short survey. It's about time we find out what sort of impact this research itself has had. Click here to fill out the School Library Studies Outcomes Survey

The Florida Study like others done in fifteen states link achievement in schools with a credentialed library media specialist. The study collected a great deal of information about the collections, services, staff, and programs of Florida's K-12 public school library media centers so that many questions can be answered about the status of Florida's LMCs in addition to the achievement link. The study begins with a comprehensive executive summary followed by the full report complete with tables and methodology. The executive summary is valuable for those making presentations to parents, boards of education, and other interested groups. For persons outside Florida, this study adds to the pile of evidence. We Boost Achievement! Evidence-Based Practice for School Library Media Specialists
Want to collect the evidence that you boost the achievement in your school with your LMC program? This book provides a multitude of techniques to collect evidence concerning reading, information literacy, collaborative planning, and technology. And like throwing pebbles in a pool causing a ripple effect, these measures not only document what you are doing, but suggest changes in your program to maximize your impact.

    Summary of the program
The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program is designed to improve student literacy skills and academic achievement by providing schools with up-to-date library materials and to ensure that school library media centers are staffed by well-trained and professionally certified school media specialists. The program is administered by the Department of Education and is the first program specifically aimed at upgrading school libraries since the original school library resources program was established in 1965. Numerous studies* show there is a clear link between the quality of library media programs in schools staffed by an experienced school library media specialist and student academic achievement. School library media centers can contribute to improved student achievement by providing up-to-date instructional materials aligned to the curriculum and instructional practices, collaborating with and supporting teachers, administrators, and parents, and extending their hours of operation beyond the school day.

SEPTEMBER 18, 1999 NEW MEXICO TASK FORCE ON SCHOOL LIBRARIES In February of this year, State Librarian Ben Wakashige asked leaders in the education and library profession to come together to create a task force to discuss the status of libraries in New Mexico's schools. Members of the New Mexico Task Force on School Libraries have concluded that a survey of all public schools was the first step in determining what is needed to improve all school libraries. The survey will assess staffing, training needs, technology and facilities, and funding for materials. The survey is being sent to all public schools to collect information on the current status of libraries and media centers. Using these findings, the New Mexico Task Force on School Libraries hopes to address the large issue of better education in New Mexico. Information from the survey will be used by the State Department of Education, the New Mexico State Library, the New Mexico Library Association, and the New Mexico Legislature to establish a profile for the current state of school libraries in New Mexico. The survey is available on the State Library web site at http://www.stlib.state.nm.us/devlp-prog.info/youth.html/

Austin Readers for School Libraries,
Austin, TX The mission of the Austin Readers for School Libraries is to "encourage and facilitate children's reading, to instill a passion for books, and to promote libraries as strong, vital institutions that are central to the well being of their schools and community." In 1995, the Board of the Austin ISD threatened to cut library positions in several of the city's smaller elementary schools. One parent, Virginia Raymond, made an impassioned plea before the Austin Independent School District Board to retain the staff. A school library supporter on the board was so impressed with Ms. Raymond that he suggested she reach out to other parents who shared her belief in the importance of quality library service in the schools. Thus the Austin Readers for School Libraries were born. Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School Friends of the Library

In a letter sent to Nevins by the Rio Rancho school administration, he is accused of having permitted students to go on “field trips” to evening poetry contests without filing school forms. As these events were not under school control, and during students' own time, these were not field trips.
