    THE CUISINE OF MEXICO
Karen Hursh Graber Her Bio Her Home Page
    Introduction
Mexico presents a different face to each person that meets her. Traveling through the country is an experience unique to the individual, even to people on the same journey, whether they be tourists spending a week at an ultra-modern beach resort or ethnologists visiting remote indigenous villages. Each of us has a personnal framework through which to view an unfamiliar place or revisit a favorite spot. As a food writer and cooking teacher, one of my own focuses while traveling is seeking out the distinct cuisine of each region I visit, exploring both everyday and ritual foods and beverages. I naturally gravitate toward the local markets, restaurants and food stalls, and living in Mexico for several years has given me plenty of opportunity to do so. The culinary practices of a particular area are nearly always a reflection of its history, cultural and religious orientation, and natural resources. Historian Jeffery M. Pilcher, in

    88. Guadalajara, Ajijic, Lake Chapala Cost Of Living Data
    Top/Regional/North_America/mexico/States/Jalisco/regions/Lake_Chapala/Business_and_Economy/Cost_of_Living
    http://www.virtualmex.com/ajijic/livecost.htm
COST OF LIVING: Living in Mexico is definitely cheaper than in the US or Canada. Some things are more expensive, but generally living is easier. Long distance calls and automobile expenses are high, but day to day living costs are low. A good rule of thumb is that fresh produce, meat, and poultry is cheaper, but canned products and North American packaged products can be more expensive. In areas like Lake Chapala, no heating or air conditioning is required, so utility costs are low. Property taxes are ridiculously low, perhaps $40 to $120 per YEAR for an average nice home. Insurance costs are low too, and since all homes are built from concrete, tile, plaster and stucco, they are virtually fireproof, eliminating the need for fire insurance on the building. Comprehensive medical insurance can be purchased for a little over $200 per year. Here are some prices for the Guadalajara/Lake Chapala area. The prices are converted to US dollars at that time. They are 'averaged' costs so you will find prices lower and higher than these. Also, prices in smaller towns will generally be a bit more expensive. AUTOMOBILE:
    • Regular gasoline - $1.80 per gallon.

    The Greeley Rodarte Dancers
    About Us
The Greeley Rodarte Dancers are a dance group that is going into their eighth year of dancing. We perform a variety of Mexican folkloric, Aztec and Spanish dances, with a variety of authentic costumes. Dances are from fifteen different regions of Mexico as well as dances from Spain.
Our group involves the dancers families, as well as the dancers themselves. Performances and functions within the group are possible because the families, as a unit, choose to be part of their child's participation within the dance group.
We have performed in many towns and cities through throughout Colorado and surrounding states sharing our knowledge of our culture through the dances. Audiences of various ages enjoy and at times, participate, in the dances with our group. We have met and had the honor of dancing for Governor Romer. We also have the pleasure of performing at the Colorado State Fair. We are the only Colorado dance company to compete in the Viva Aztlan national dance competition held annually in Lubbock, Texas. The group recently received a commendation for their performances from the Police department and City of Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
We are a non-profit organization assisted by the city of Greeley government. Sponsorship, fund raisers, donations and performances are our means of financial necessities. The City of Greeley provides our dancers with transportation when we perform out of town. It is up to the organization itself to provide the funding for the existence of the group. Year round, families participate in various fund raisers. Bake sales, car washes, recitals and performances are a few of the activities that we participate in to support our group.

NOAA Magazine NOAA Home Page Commerce Dept. NOAA ANNOUNCES NEW INTERNATIONAL MONSOON RESEARCH PROGRAM NOAA and Mexico's weather service, the Servicio Meteorologico Nacional , have joined forces to develop improved monsoon season forecasts. The initial phase of the North American Monsoon Experiment , or NAME, an internationally coordinated, joint U.S.-Mexico program, begins this month. The aim of the program is to improve long-range precipitation forecasts during the North American monsoon season of June through September. (Click NOAA image for larger view of 120-hour precipitation outlook, for June 24-29, 2004, showing strong rainfall potential developing in New Mexico with the new backdoor cold front that moves into central and southern New Mexico after 24 hours, including 60-hour precipitation totals. The 5-day forecast indicates rainfall will exceed two to three inches in sections of south-central New Mexico.
