24,752 morning; 24,914 Sunday Milestones: The Las Cruces Sun-News traces its roots to The Rio Grande Republican, a four-page weekly founded in 1881. The Republican was purchased in 1917 by Dan and Dave Bronson and renamed The Rio Grande Republic. The brothers later merged the newspaper with a farming publication and renamed it The Rio Grande Farmer; in 1934, they revamped The Farmer to create The Las Cruces Daily News, the city’s first daily newspaper. A rival daily, the Las Cruces Sun, appeared in 1937. It bought the Daily News in 1939, creating the Las Cruces Sun-News. The newspaper passed through several family owners until being sold to Worrell Newspapers in 1970. MediaNews Group Inc. purchased it in 1989. The Sun-News now is the largest newspaper in southwestern New Mexico. About Las Cruces: Located about 45 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas, in southern New Mexico, Las Cruces was incorporated as a town in 1907. In 1949, it was established as a city. It is 50 miles west of White Sands National Monument near White Sands Missile Range, where the first atomic bomb was exploded on July 16, 1945.

Getting the Big Picture of the Past Through Newspapers
    By James W. Petty
Elsie Wormser was born in Deming, Grant County, New Mexico in 1894, the daughter of Gustav and Ella Klauber. Using standard genealogy sources, we can identify Elsie in the 1900 and 1920 censuses of San Francisco, California, where the family moved in the late 1890s. According to these records her father, Gustav, was a grocer, born in Wuerttemberg, Germany in 1859, and came to America in 1876. But this offers little regarding her birth and information about her early life. Births weren't registered in New Mexico until 1920. California death records indicate that she died in San Francisco in 1948, but give her birth as 1891 in New Mexico. Where do we go for information?
The newspaper is our hero in this case. Deming, New Mexico, was a small mining town in Grant County, in the southwestern corner of the state, and on the Mexican and Arizona borders. This was wild and untamed territory in the 1890s. Indian troubles plagued the settlers, and Mexican raiding parties kept the U.S. Army busy. The nearest center of civilization was eighty miles away in El Paso, Texas, if that could be called "civilization." The major industry was mining, and men from all over America, and indeed from other countries, as well, had settled in this dust bowl searching for elusive veins of silver. It was definitely a wilderness. But for modern genealogists the treasure was there-they had a newspaper.

Masonic Lodge provides new library cornerstone Information provided by Robert Anderson San Juan Masonic Lodge # 25 and the Grand Lodge of New Mexico have provided a granite cornerstone for the new Aztec Public Library facility that will be dedicated during the Grand Opening Celebration on September 24, at 10:00 am. A time capsule will be placed behind the cornerstone and is slated to be opened in the year 2055. You may wonder - what is a cornerstone? The dictionary defines a cornerstone as 1) a stone at the outer corner of two intersecting masonry walls, or 2) a stone in the exterior of a large and important building, usually carved with a date and laid with appropriate ceremonies. Freemasons have been laying cornerstones for centuries. Brother Mason and President George Washington, for instance, presided over the laying of the cornerstone at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. on September 18, 1793. Dedicating a cornerstone is a Masonic and American tradition and over the last two centuries American Masons have placed thousands of cornerstones across our great country.
