The UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico. Development of U-2, SR-71 spy planes and VCASS for RPVs. During the summer of 1947, a few weeks after a private pilot reported seeing a flight of unusual aircraft skimming along the mountain tops in the Pacific Northwest, Mac Brazel, a sheep rancher living near Corona, New Mexico stomped into the sheriff's office to complain that something large had fallen from the sky and was cluttering up one of his meadows. After hearing a description of the object, the sheriff suggested Mac report the incident to the authorities at Roswell Army Air Field. Roswell AAF was, in 1947, home to the 509th Bomb Group. The 509th flew B-29s that carried Atomic Bombs. Two questions arise:
In 1947 the press, the Air Force, and scientists spent a lot of time trying to convince the American public that no aircraft could enter our airspace without being detected by radar, especially around Roswell, Los Alamos and White Sands. But what most people didn't know then and still don't know today, is that in 1947 America had an aircraft that was, for all practical purposes, invisible to radar! It had not been designed as a stealth aircraft because no one even understood the concept in 1947, but this airplane, the brainchild of Northrup Aviation, the YB-49 Flying Wing, reflected such a small radar image that ground operators literally could not detect it. Indeed, its profile was so slight while airborne that it could not be seen visually until it was over the airfield!

By Gary Smith Last updated on Thursday, January 09, 2003 Visitors Center at Fort Selden. One of the photos often seen in World War II literature is of General Douglas MacArthur wading ashore at Leyte in the Phillipines in 1944, honoring his “I Shall Return” promise to help liberate the islands from the Japanese. As a young boy 60 years earlier, the future General of the Army might well have waded barefoot in the muddy Rio Grande River in Southern New Mexico. On a recent visit to Fort Selden State Monument , I was reminded of the fort’s connection with MacArthur, one of the 20th Century’s best known military figures. Fort Selden is located about 15 miles north of Las Cruces , up the Rio Grande valley near Radium Springs You can get there on Interstate 25 , but it’s a more leisurely drive up Highway 1-85 , which follows the course of the Rio Grande northward. Remnants of the fort’s adobe walls remain, and there’s a modern visitor center with a museum housing interesting exhibits depicting life in the U.S.Army of the late 1800’s. Visitors may view a short video telling the history of the fort, if they wish, before taking a self-guided walking tour of the grounds. Fort Selden was one of a series of frontier outposts established by the government after the Civil War to protect western settlers from the Indians and from outlaws. The fort was built in 1865 and occupied off and on until it was finally abandoned in 1891. In 1884, career officer Captain Arthur MacArthur was assigned to Fort Selden as Commanding Officer. He brought with him his wife and two young sons, one of whom was the young future general Douglas.

New Generation of U.S.-Mexico Cooperation and Trust
Prepared remarks by Secretary of Defense William J. Perry at the Mexican Ministry of Defense, Mexico City, Oct. 23, 1995. Thank you very much, Gen. [Enrique] Cervantes [Mexican minister of defense]. I have just been honored by a ceremony that demonstrated the best trained, most disciplined military I have ever seen. It is a truly elite military unit that can stand side by side with any other in the world and is one of which you can be proud. Our well-being depends in the long run on the well-being of our neighbors. These words, spoken 60 years ago by Franklin Roosevelt, launched what came to be known as his good neighbor policy. President Clinton has taken these words to heart. When he hosted President [Ernesto] Zedillo [Ponce de Le¢n] in Washington just two weeks ago, he said: The stronger our trade, the greater the well-being of all of our people. The deeper our cooperation, the better we will be able to fight together our common problems. The more effective our partnership, the stronger an example we will be able to set for all the nations of our hemisphere.

MILITARY ACADEMY APPOINTMENTS - REVIEW BOARD
Senator Domenici established the Military Academy Review Board to provide each candidate the opportunity for a personal interview. The Review Boards are composed of New Mexicans who were selected because of their outstanding character, community spirit and interest in the continuance of our high caliber of military leadership. This procedure is designed to give each applicant from New Mexico an equal opportunity to be selected as a nominee to one of the United States service academies. Senator Domenici is currently accepting applications for this year's competition. Each Member of Congress may have five cadets or midshipmen in each of the academies, with the exception of the Merchant Marine Academy, which is allowed two. The Review Boards will select ten nominees per vacancy to be submitted to the Air Force, Army and Naval Academy for the upcoming year. In the case of the Merchant Marine academy, a total of ten nominees may be submitted by each Member of Congress to be considered for the two vacancies allotted to their State. From the ten applicants nominated for each vacancy the academy will make the final decision as to which of the ten will be offered an appointment. Prior to a candidate's interview, each Review Board member will be handed a personal packet of information on that candidate; this packet will consist of an application sheet, two letters of recommendation, statement of reasons, high school transcript and a recent photograph. Each candidate will be allotted 15 minutes for an interview. The questions asked of the candidates during the interview will be at the discretion of the Board. Suggested for judging prospective nominees are: character, scholarship, leadership ability, physical aptitude, medical fitness and motivation.

Back to Lab News home page.
Here's an insight into what makes Marta Strzyzewski tick: The first piece of furniture her parents bought when they arrived in the US from Communist-dominated Poland during the height of the Cold War was a piano.
MARTA Strzyzewski prepares for the talent portion of the 2001 Miss America pageant by practicing on one of the Steinway grand pianos at Washburn Piano Co. in Hoffmantown Shopping Center. (Photo by Randy Montoya)
Marta, a student intern in Computational Initiatives Dept. 15311, recently won the 2001 Miss New Mexico pageant. That means she'll be competing for the Miss America title in Atlantic City this September (it is televised on Sept. 22). As her talent, she'll be playing the piano, a demanding Chopin piece called the "Revolutionary Etude." Marta (her last name is pronounced shtra-ZHEF-ski) was born in Warsaw. She came to Roswell in 1984 at age six. Her father was active in the Solidarity Movement, working shoulder to shoulder with Lech Walesa and others to restore democracy and economic prosperity to the beleaguered Eastern European nation. When the Soviets and their Polish proxies clamped down on the increasingly popular and effective Solidarity Movement in the early 1980s, Marta's parents decided it was time to escape the repressive regime. Marta's dad escaped to the US first while her mom waited to give birth to Marta's brother before flying overseas. Unfortunately, martial law was imposed a few days after her father left, and the family ended up being separated for two years. Her dad found a job in Roswell first working at St. Mary's Hospital and then settling at the TMC bus manufacturing plant. After the borders reopened in Poland, her mother, brother, and Marta were reunited with her father, thanks to a lot of help from his TMC coworkers and Sen. Jeff Bingaman's office.

Hispano America USA By Rudi Williams American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON Edward D. Baca's unrelenting grief over his father's sudden death bewildered his family. Their fervent, perpetual quest to detach the teen-ager from his bereavement failed, until a cousin sculptured a novel idea to soothe his pain. On Nov. 19, 1956, a first cousin took the grieving teen-ager to the New Mexico National Guard armory. "Raise your right hand," the cousin told young Baca. "What am I doing?" the youngster asked? "You're joining the National Guard," his cousin responded. Baca smiles when he fondly remembers that day. "I'd just lost my father; he'd died suddenly," the general said. "We were very close, and I was going through some tough times really torn up. I think my cousin thought he had to do something to get my mind off of losing my father." That's how Army National Guard Lt. Gen. Edward D. Baca launched his more than four-decade military career. He enlisted in Battery C, 726th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, New Mexico Army National Guard, and during the next six years served in various assignments, ranging from anti-aircraft gunner to supply sergeant. About six years later, his cousin presented an idea that catapulted Baca to the zenith of the Army and Air National Guard the presidential-appointed position of chief of the National Guard Bureau at the Pentagon. "You've gone as far as you're going to go as an enlisted man, you better attend officer's candidate school," his cousin suggested. Baca graduated July 20, 1962, three days before his 24th birthday.

A long road from New Mexico Jack Samson's travels from New Mexico to Editor-in-Chief of Field and Stream in New York took many turns, always including the outdoors By Craig Springer Special to ESPNOutdoors.com Jack Samson holds a bonefish, caught by fly, on Ambergris Caye in Belize in May 1999.
Stories my dad told me about bear and deer and elk of his youth in northern New Mexico turned me on to hunting when I was a youngster. Yarns about pheasant hunting near the Rio Grande fueled the flames. From the start, I seemed consumed by a passion for the out-of-doors. I started hunting, as most do at an early age, around 13 as I recall. About the same time that I got my first smoothbore, a heavy Mossberg 12-gauge pump, I talked my dad into buying me a subscription to Field and Stream. A 13-year-old doesn't get a lot of mail and I remember how excited I was to get an outdoors magazine with my name on it. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the magazine carried the name of another New Mexican on it, Jack Samson, Editor-in-chief. In 1930, doctors suggested to Samson's parents that a move west could save the then 8-year-old boy from asthma. In the humid Rhode Island climate the attacks were harsh, keeping him in bed two weeks at a time. After two weeks in a Buick on old Route 66, Samson, his mother, and two younger siblings landed at a rented ranch.
