The College Program
"Academic Excellence and
A Commission in Two Years"
The High School Program
"A Solid Academic Preparation"
The School
New Mexico Military Institute was established in 1891 and became a State (Territorial) School in 1893. Its purpose then and now is "for the education and training of the youth of this country with a mandate by law to be of as high a standard as like institutions in other states and territories of the United States." New Mexico Military Institute is primarily an academic institution operating within the framework of a military environment. The junior college curriculum is primarily designed to prepare students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities as juniors in good standing. An Associate in Arts degree is awarded upon graduation from the junior college. As a military junior college, New Mexico Military Institute offers an Army College ROTC program that permits a young person, in the college, to be commissioned as a second lieutenant in only two years. Students who receive a commission may serve in the U.S. Army Reserve or National Guard, or may choose to apply for active duty upon receipt of their baccalaureate degree. The high school curriculum is a solid academic college preparatory course of study. A student may be permitted to take college courses while in high school.

Home School Operators Procedures Manual Introduction
In 1985, amendments to Chapter 22 of New Mexico Statutes Annotated, (NMSA), 1978, provided a framework in which the right of parents to home school their children was recognized. On July, 1994, Senate Bill 202a, as enacted by the Legislature, and signed by Governor Bruce King, became effective. The Bill amended the definition of home school in Section 22-1-2 V, NMSA 1978, to read, "the operation by a parent, legal guardian or other person having custody of a school-age person who instructs a home study program that provides a basic academic educational program, including, but not limited, to reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies and science." The Bill also removed the requirement that a home school operator possess a baccalaureate degree or a waiver of the baccalaureate degree requirement by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The law was changed to require that a home school operator possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. The bill also amended the definition of private school to read, "a school offering (on-site) programs of instruction not under the control, supervision or management of a local school board, exclusive of home instruction offered by the parent, legal guardian or one having custody of the student."
