In autumn, when the high desert has cooled, Quebradas Road provides escape into some of the least disturbed Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico. A federally designated National Backcountry Byway, it threads through a tapestry of color-banded cliffs, water-sculpted arroyos, and desert wilderness. Exit I-25 at Escondida, two miles (3.2 kilometers) north of Socorro. Cross the Rio Grande and drive through the hamlet of Pueblito. Continue south for just over half a mile (just under one kilometer), then turn left at the sign marking the start of the byway. Note your odometer. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Author: Thomas D. Sisk Geographic Information Systems allow the overlaying of data layers as diverse as satellite imagery, plant surveys, and bird abundance data. Different data layers can be queried simultaneously, providing deeper insight than might be possible with traditional analytical approaches. Geographic Information systems (GIS) are the combination of spatially referenced data, appropriate computer hardware and software, and users competent to employ the data and technology to solve problems. GIS is typically used to store and analyze extensive information in a map-based format. This allows relatively easy retrieval and manipulation of information and provides new analytical capabilities based on spatial relationships between sites of interest and any combination of available data sets.
GIS as link a between geography and related sciences
Diverse data types, be they physical, biological, or cultural, can be incorporated into this landscape representation, using a topology that retains their inherent spatial relationships. These innovations have revolutionized the way we work with spatial data and they we think about maps themselves

    History of Railroads and Maps
The Beginnings of American Railroads The Transcontinental Railroad Mapmaking and Printing The Growth of Mapping ... Notes Surveying and mapping activities flourished in the United States as people began moving inland over the inadequately mapped continent. The settlement of the frontier, the development of agriculture, and the exploitation of natural resources generated a demand for new ways to move people and goods from one place to another. Privately owned toll or turnpike roads were followed first by steamships on the navigable rivers and by the construction of canals and then in the 1830s by the introduction of railroads for steam-powered trains.
The Beginnings of American Railroads and Mapping Railways were introduced in England in the seventeenth century as a way to reduce friction in moving heavily loaded wheeled vehicles. The first North American "gravity road," as it was called, was erected in 1764 for military purposes at the Niagara portage in Lewiston, New York. The builder was Capt. John Montressor, a British engineer known to students of historical cartography as a mapmaker.

The society survey found that only about one in seven 13 percent of Americans between the age of 18 and 24, the prime age for military warriors, could find Iraq. The score was the same for Iran, an Iraqi neighbor. Although the majority, 58 percent, of the young Americans surveyed knew that the Taliban and al Qaeda were based in Afghanistan, only 17 percent could find that country on a world map. A U.S.-led force attacked the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan in October 2001, and President Bush has said he is prepared to use force to rid Iraq of any chemical, nuclear or biological weapons programs.
