Some fear U.S. cultural invasion

MEXICO CITY (AP) Mexicans fear a cultural revival that has produced films like "Y Tu Mama Tambien" will be sabotaged if the government goes ahead with a proposal to cut much of its funding for the arts. President Vicente Fox's proposal to get rid of everything from government-owned movie studios to the national news agency has sparked fears that Mexico will be overwhelmed by an American cultural invasion. "We will be left to the mercy and whims of distributors of Hollywood's worst productions," author Laura Esquivel said during a protest meeting Thursday of writers, directors, artists and producers at Mexico's Congress building. "It would be ignorant to think that Mexican cinema could really survive without a mix of public and private support," said Esquivel, who wrote the script for the 1992 movie "Como Agua Para Chocolate," or "Like Water for Chocolate." The movie was based on Esquivel's novel of the same name.

Zapatista rebels, Mexican government to talk peace
November 20, 1998
Web posted at: 3:15 p.m. EST (2015 GMT) SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico (CNN) National legislators and Zapatista National Liberation Army rebels were to resume peace talks Friday aimed at ending a five-year-old conflict over indigenous rights in the southern state of Chiapas The three-day talks will be the first face-to-face contact between the Zapatistas and government representatives since negotiations were halted in January 1997, four months after the breakdown of formal peace negotiations. Those peace negotiations had come after enigmatic rebel leader Subcommander Marcos led the Zapatistas in a violent rebellion against the government in January 1994 in an attempt to win improved rights for indigenous people. The Zapatista delegation says that, this time, the government of President Ernesto Zedillo must demonstrate its commitment to a peaceful solution by reducing the heavy military presence in the impoverished state.

Mexico's government trying to distance itself from massacre
January 3, 1998 Web posted at: 8:40 p.m. EST (0140 GMT) SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico (CNN) Mexico's government has taken out full-page newspaper ads denying involvement in the massacre of 45 Indians in Chiapas, distancing itself from an attack linked to local members of the ruling party. And in a bid to counter the peaceful image that Chiapas' Zapatista rebels are trying to cultivate, the government said the army has discovered a small arms cache in a pro-Zapatista village near the massacre site in the highlands of southern Mexico. "The federal government wants peace ... and to avoid new episodes of violence," said the advertisement placed by the Interior Ministry, published in several national newspapers. It also insisted President Ernesto Zedillo's Institutional Revolutionary Party had no part in funding or directing the paramilitaries blamed for the December 22 massacre in the hamlet of Acteal. Historian and former rebel advisor Antonio Garcia de Leon called the unusual ad a sign that the ruling party is worried about evidence linking its local members to the attack.

Mexicans say government mishandled flood disaster
Soldiers dig through the mud that covers the La Aurora neighborhood of Teziutlan October 11, 1999
Web posted at: 9:39 p.m. EDT (0139 GMT) In this story: A presidential issue Intra-party disagreement RELATED STORIES, SITES MEXICO CITY (CNN) With hundreds dead and tens of thousands homeless from a week of flooding across southeastern Mexico, a tide of blame is rising against Mexico's government for the high death toll and slow response to the disaster. Official accounts say 349 people have died in the floods and mudslides that accompanied a storm that never even reached tropical storm strength as it churned offshore in the Gulf of Campeche for more than a week. Officials believe that number could go as high as 600. At least 200,000 were left homeless by the rain, which continued Monday in nine Mexican states. Thousands more were stranded without electricity, food or medicine by washed out bridges and roads.
