http://www.sanjuaneds.com/0_Community/aztec.html
Aztec was originally settled by Pueblan Indians in the 13th century. The ruined city they left behind on the banks of the Animas River is an outlier of the Chacoan civilization that once extended from northern Mexico into southern Utah. Today Aztec is a town of 6,378 with an historic town center. It is the seat of San Juan County government and home to the Aztec Ruins National Monument. Aztec is located between the larger cities of Farmington, New Mexico, and Durango, Colorado, with comfortable residential neighborhoods and a picturesque central business district that houses several thriving local businesses.

    Failing Democratic Transition in Mexico:
    Government Removes Popular Presidential Hopeful
    Laura Carlsen
    International Relations Center
April 9, 2005 Mexico City's Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (center) gives a speech on April 7. (Photo: Juan Barreto / AFP-Getty Images) When Vicente Fox ended the 71-year reign of Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the 2000 presidential elections, many observers heralded it as the beginning of a long-overdue transition to democracy. Now President Fox, in a concerted effort with members of the former ruling party, has closed the door on that transition. By orchestrating a pseudo-legal offensive against Mexico City’s popular mayor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Fox has not only dashed the hopes of Mexicans for a real democracy, but has also destroyed the political capital he gained back in 2000. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Mexico City ’s central square to protest Congress’s decision to strip Lopez Obrador of immunity to prosecution granted elected officials. The mayor will now stand trial for allegedly failing to follow a court order to halt work on an access road to a local hospital. According to the federal attorney general’s office, the government will likely put Lopez Obrador behind bars, as a “preventive measure,” before the trial even starts.
