http://countrystudies.us/united-states/geography-19.htm
The Southwest Border Area
United States Geography The area known generally as the Southwest is one of the most widely recognized yet one of the most transitionary regions of America. It has an apparent physical uniformity that can be attributed primarily to its clear, dry climate, but, in fact, the region includes the broad flatlands of the lower Rio Grande Valley; the plateaus of New Mexico; the dramatic mesas, buttes, and deserts of Arizona; and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. The Southwest is made distinctive by the coexistence of Spanish-American, American Indian, and Anglo cultures, and the physical environment is almost like a stage that serves to emphasize aspects of each. The American Indian and Spanish populations coexisted in much of the region for 250 years after Spanish arrival at the end of the 16th century before Anglos began immigrating in the middle of the 19th century. The canyonlands of northern Arizona and southern Utah provided an effective barrier to Spanish expansion northward from Mexico. The Spanish moved up the Rio Grande to the broad expanse of the Rocky Mountains, north of which little Hispanic settlement developed. In Texas, most settlement remained concentrated along the Rio Grande and Nueces Rivers. The extensive cattle-grazing industry that the Spanish introduced into south Texas was ill-suited to the moist, forested lands of the eastern portion of the state. That area, left as a frontier, was largely unsettled by the Spaniards. Most migration by Spanish-Americans beyond this original settlement area has been to urban places.

    LABOR FORCE PROJECTIONS FOR NEW MEXICO AND SELECTED MSA’S
    Scope of Work
    In response to discussions with the New Mexico Department of Labor, BBER augmented the current FOR-UNM Economic model to include labor force projections for the State of New Mexico, the Las Cruces MSA, the Santa Fe MSA and the Albuquerque MSA. In addition to the 10-year projections of total labor force, BBER has completed 10-year projections for each of the geographic areas for the following concepts:
    • Labor force by gender;
    • Labor force by selected age cohort (16 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 59, 60+).
    Approach
    The project was divided into two distinct phases. Phase I involved the creation of historical labor force participation rates for each of the identified geographic area, gender and age cohort. Phase II mimicked the BLS methodology1 to provide a ten-year forecast of labor force participation rates. The following sections will discuss the methodology and underlying assumptions.
    Phase I – Creation of Historical Labor Force Participation Rates (LFPRs)
    Also agreed, intercensal estimates of LFPR are interpolated trends lines between decennial Census years. This avoids the issue of intercensal population estimate distortions but introduces the possibility that NMDOL Labor Force estimates aggregated from age and gender cohorts may differ slightly from published NMDOL numbers.

    Personal Statement:
    At present, I am working with colleagues Winifred Creamer, Alvaro Ruiz, and Kit Nelson investigating the Late Archaic (ca. 3000-1800 B.C.) occupation of a portion of the coast known as the "Norte Chico". This is a group of 4 valleys, Huaura, Supe, Pativilca and Fortaleza, on the Pacific coast between 140 and 200 km north of Lima. In this area there are more than 20 very large sites, all with monumental architecture, ceremonial structures, and variable residential structures. The sites were all occupied prior to the introduction of pottery on the Peruvian coast, which places their occupation between about 3000 and 1800 B.C. We have spent the past two seasons testing 15 of these sites in two valleys, primarily to extract radiocarbon samples and soil samples for botanical and zoological remains. The Proyecto Arqueológico Norte Chico is planned as a long-term project with a permanent field headquarters in the town of Barranca.

    Fax: (402) 472-9642 Subfield: Archaeology Major Research Interests: Archaeological method and theory, archaic-late prehistoric of the North American high plains, traditional food preparation, spatial analysis, quantitative methods (GIS, EDA), formation of the archaeological landscape, pastoralist land use systems Dr. Wandsnider's research has three main themes. The first of these is concerned with the Late Prehistoric time period on the High Plains. In Northwestern Nebraska, her research has focused on the appearance and disappearance of pit hearth technology, which was widely used from AD 250 through AD 1000. The ability of the this material record to comment on gender systems, land tenure, subsistence strategies, and so forth is the subject of her research here. A second emphasis is that of the formation, documentation, and analysis of archaeological landscapes. She has worked in southern India, using ethnoarchaeological methods to monitor land parcels that participate in an agropastoral land use system. Other recent methodological work is concerned with spatial analysis of archaeological distributions that relies on results from actualistic studies. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and associated technologies (GPS, remote sensing) play an important role in this work.
