Next Welcome to the WED faculty and staff development website! The goal of this website is twofold: first, to provide relevant e-Training for our personnel, and second to provide access to important resources. Mission Statement The WED faculty and staff development initiative is dedicated to continuous improvement in human performance and learning to serve students preparing for careers in corporations, volunteer organizations, apprenticeship programs, secondary and post-secondary educational institutions, government agencies and military organizations. We have about 150 faculty, administrative/professional staff, and civil service employees – all serving about 1000 students enrolled each semester in our Bachelor of Science degree program in Workforce Education and Development. Our program is on the main campus of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and on 16 off-campus sites across the United States. That is, we’re in Connecticut, Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, Washington, California, and New Mexico. Our students come from those states and others in close proximity. In the last year, we’ve undertaken major curricular improvement work. Included in that work is the integration of distance learning activities into seated classes and the delivery of entire courses through distance learning technologies. This is

President's Commission on Multicultural Affairs Annual Report (FY 97)
Overview Committee Action Faculty and Staff Losses New Full-time Unclassified Faculty and Staff of Color ... Diversity Expenditure I. Overview The Annual Report of the President’s Commission on Multicultural Affairs was delayed in order to include the Report on Diversity Initiatives Since 1990 for members of the Commission. The Commission has been pivotal in guiding and operationalizing many of the initiatives over the past several years. The charge for the Commission for this year FY98 is to develop a diversity plan that will take K-State into the 21st century. It is important to note that President Wefald continues to affirm the University’s commitment to diversity and affirmative action. As a Commission, we cannot underestimate the importance of the President in setting the tone for diversity for the entire university community. He made the following statements related to diversity and affirmative action in his State of the University Address on September 11, 1997: "I want to state my unwavering commitment to diversity and affirmative action. As you know across the country, there is growing opposition to affirmative action. I think these efforts are mistaken and anti-productive. At K-State, we have a very effective affirmative action program which does not rely on quotas or set asides. Rather we want to recruit and retain as student, faculty, staff and administrators, the most qualified minorities and women . . . We have made some good progress in creating a diverse student body and university staff. There is much more to be done especially in the hiring of minority faculty members. We shall not shrink back from these efforts. They are right for K-State and they are right for America."

Programs School Administrators Article SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARTICLE Could Four-Day Weeks Work for You? Some school districts looking to save time and money have switched to four-day school weeks, either leaving the fifth day free or available for tutoring and parent conferences. Although some superintendents favor the concentrated class time, some say the wear and tear from a longer day has not been worth it for staff or students. Included: Tips for weighing the switch to a four-day week. At a time when many school administrators are looking to stretch dollars and teaching time, some rural school districts are compressing the school week into four longer class days. At least one superintendent told Education World that the schedule not only saved money but boosted staff and student morale as well. Not all school districts, though, find that a shorter class week meets their needs. Some superintendents who have used the schedule said they have not realized the hoped-for benefits, such as additional productive class time, increased test scores, and marked financial savings.
