The New Mexico School Health Manual website is online! New Mexico's Yucca Model of Coordinated School Health Children and youth who begin each day as healthy individuals can learn more effectively and are more likely to complete their formal education. With family and community support, systemic change must occur in order to address students' barriers to learning such as health problems, lack of access to support services, and poor peer relationships. The Healthier Schools New Mexico - Coordinated School Health Approach, illustrated by the yucca plant, provides a programmatic framework for student learning. The focus is on the blossom, the healthy and successful student. The tap root is the family without which children cannot thrive and grow. The other roots represent the responsibilities that culture, education, public services, media, community, and businesses have in producing healthier students. The root system is the nurturing network which supplies the resources and energy for the yucca to grow. The leaves, which represent the components of coordinated school health, symbolize the daily opportunities schools have to interact with children on health related issues, of which there are many. Evaluation Handbook

This is an excellent primar on evalution from the W K Kellog Foundation. Resources: Arts integrated Schools A+ Schools The Whole Schools Initiative The Whole Schools Initiative is about comprehensive school reform using the arts, and requires a strong five-year commitment from the school and district. It is expected that school districts and the communities in which they exist will continue to support their Whole Schools project site after the five years is complete. Unlike the other grant categories, Whole Schools offers, indeed requires, a training component. The initiative is open to elementary and middle schools, with the prospect of expanding to high schools in the future. The goal of the initiative is to educate every child in a school in and through the arts. All members of the school community play an important role in this initiative: the superintendent, the principal, arts and classroom teachers, students, parents, community organizations, local artists and businesses. Also see our Arts Education Links and our Arts Education Lesson Plans pages for more resources.
