ArtsEducation Task Force NMA has completed an Arts Education Task Force to determine the Agency’s goals for Arts Education. The following are the recommendations made to New Mexico Arts: I. ADVOCATING FOR ARTS EDUCATION, TO DECISION MAKERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC Effective advocacy is needed to educate policy-makers and the public about the significant contribution that arts-based learning can be making in New Mexico's schools and communities. The arts are often considered to be an "extra" by administrators and school boards faced with an educational crisis. The critical message is that quality arts education, integrated into a student's learning program, is often the key which unlocks the opening toward the goals that educators are striving for: quality teaching, student and teacher retention, improved test scores, and enthusiastic learning. These benefits must be evidenced throughout the educational decision-making system, and the necessary resources for institutionalizing arts-based learning must be dedicated. Four of the nine Task Force strategies address interrelated aspects of a successful advocacy plan: A. COLLECT RELEVANT ARTS EDUCATION IMPACT DATA

2003 Hall of Honor The University of New Mexico Alumni Lettermen's Association has announced the 2003 inductees into the Hall of Honor, plus honorees who will be recognized at the awards banquet in September. The Class of 2003 includes George Friberg, Dana Miller-Mackie, Mike Prokopiak, Stan Quintana and Robert Stamm. Also recognized are Bobby Lee (Posthumous Award), George Petrol (Posthumous Award), J.D. Kailer (Distinguished Service), Ruben Douglas (Male Athlete of the Year) and Jordan Adams (Female Athlete of the Year). Ruben Douglas - 2002-03 UNM Male Athlete of the Year
Ruben Douglas became the first Lobo to lead the nation in scoring, averaging nearly 28 points per game in 2002-03. He was named the 2003 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, the Bob King Team MVP, all-district selection by the United States Basketball Writers Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches and honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press. He was also selected to UNM's all-time team in a voting by fans. In all, Douglas set 48 UNM and MWC records. He was the first Lobo to average more than 20 points per game since Hunter Greene in 1986-87. Douglas also led the 2002-03 team in rebounding, averaging 6.6 rebounds per game. Beyond setting records, Douglas is known for the leadership he showed the rest of the team during a tough season. He was "the glue that kept a team and a fan base from falling apart at the seams," wrote the Daily Lobo.
