In an effort to meet the needs of the ever-changing workforce, many New Jersey institutions are reevaluating their graduate programs and are adding new options. William Paterson University in Wayne, one of several New Jersey colleges offering new graduate programs this Fall, realizes the importance of meeting society's needs. Barbara Martin, university spokeswoman, said the institution has established two new master's degree programs: educational leadership and fine arts. The 36-credit master's degree program in educational leadership prepares candidates both to lead and manage schools successfully. "Created to foster supportive, collaborative leadership, the program is designed for teachers and administrators who aspire to hold leadership positions in schools," said Martin. The value of teamwork is emphasized; students work together in small and large groups during the time it takes to complete the courses. The program accommodates work schedules and includes weekend classes and condensed Summer courses. Upon completion of the coursework and the appropriate state exam, participants are eligible for principal licensure by the New Jersey Department of Education. The master of fine arts degree replaces the university's master of arts in visual arts, and represents the first terminal degree program in William Paterson's history.

REPORT CARDS
NCLB 2004 GUIDE TO THE NCLB REPORT Guide to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Report The federal No Child left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires public accountability reports at the school, district, and state levels that include student assessment data disaggregated into subgroups, information on "highly qualified" teachers, attendance and dropout/graduation rates, and the status of adequate yearly progress. Since New Jersey already produces an annual school report card required by state law, the New Jersey Department of Education decided it would be easier for districts and the public if the state published the reports containing data for the school, district, and state levels required by NCLB Guide to the Fields in the NCLB Report Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) Status District-level AYP
Districts are identified as "in need of improvement" for the following conditions:
  • Have not achieved AYP for two consecutive years in the same content areas (subject) in all elementary grade (3-5), middle grade (6-8), and high school grade (9-12) spans;
  • Have 50 percent or more of their schools within the district that have not achieved AYP; and

At a time when U.S. schools will need to hire over two million new teachers to serve a growing number of students and replace a large cohort of retiring teachers, new research findings from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) suggest that 43% of new teachers do not anticipate staying in the classroom as full-time teachers for their entire careers. The findings, part of a study of first- and second-year teachers in New Jersey, also show that 46% of the state's new teachers are mid-career entrants to the field, suggesting that mid-career entrants are becoming teachers in roughly the same numbers as first-career entrants. Researchers at HGSE's Project on the Next Generation of Teachers also found that compared with 6% of first-career entrants, a greater proportion (19%) of the mid-career entrants participated in alternative certification instead of traditional teacher education programs.
