New Jersey
One of the original thirteen states of the American Union . It ratified the Federal Constitution on 18 December, 1787, being preceded only by Delaware and Pennsylvania. The capital of the state is Trenton. The extreme length of New Jersey from north to south is 160 miles, its extreme breadth 70 miles, and its gross area 7815 square miles. It is situated between 38° 55' 39" and 41° 21' 19" N. lat., and between 73° 53' 51" and 75° 33' 3" W. long. It is bounded on the north by New York State, on the east by the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Delaware Bay, and on the west by the Delaware River. In 1910 the population was 2,537,167 (1,883,669 in 1900), the state being thus, notwithstanding its large mountainous and forest areas, more densely populated than the most fertile of the prairie states or the great manufacturing States of New York or Pennsylvania. New Jersey has, in proportion to its area, more miles of railway than any other state, the majority of the eastern trunk lines traversing it. Its farms yield a larger income in proportion to the area cultivated than the richest states of the Mississippi valley. In manufactures it ranks sixth in the Union.

Synopsis of Services Publications Resources Selected Articles from School Leader School Leader
January/February 1999 New Jersey's Schools on the Mend By Barbara J. Bohi Just about everyone agrees that a dire need exists for facility improvements in New Jersey's public schools. But how to go about achieving this is another question. In what may become the largest school building program in New Jersey's history, Governor Whitman is laying the groundwork for a plan to finance more than $5 billion in public school construction over the next decade. This current initiative is not the first time the state has attempted to confront the critical backlog in school facility needs. In 1993, the Legislature authorized the Economic Development Authority to provide $500 million in low-interest loans. There were also three separate statutory authorizations for bond issues for additional state school building aid in 1968, 1971 and 1978 for $90 million, $90 million and $100 million, respectively. The impetus for the current proposal is the New Jersey Supreme Court's most recent decision in Abbott v. Burke which ordered the state to fully fund the rehabilitation or replacement of 429 school buildings in the 28 most disadvantaged urban school districts, referred to as the "Abbott" districts. The Supreme Court also ordered the state to meet strict deadlines that require architectural blueprints to be completed by September 1999 and construction to begin in the Abbott districts by the year 2000.

HISTORICAL DATA DEFINITIONS
DEFINITIONS FOR NEW JERSEY SCHOOL REPORT CARD 2003
INTRODUCTION In 1995, the New Jersey State Legislature mandated the New Jersey School Report Card in N.J.S.A. 18A:7E 1-5. The law outlines the fields of information that are required at a minimum, including the school narrative. This report card issued in February 2004 contains data for the 2002-03 school year. Enrollment numbers are based on the October 15, 2002 district enrollment count. The information in the report card is school-level data, except for the finance section which contains district-level information. For charter schools, however, the finance section is school-level. Unless otherwise stated, the source of the information contained in the New Jersey School Report Card is the school district or the charter school. As you use the school report card, there are several general practices and definitions that are used throughout the document. They are as follows:
  • SUPPRESSION: In reporting any type of assessment results, an asterisk indicates that the data were suppressed for any group of students that numbered ten or less in order to protect privacy. Test data are also suppressed where the failure rate is 100%, including all other data related to it.

POSTED: 3:56 pm EST November 4, 2004 UPDATED: 7:55 am EST November 9, 2004 LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. National Guard officials were at the Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School on Monday night, offering their first explanation on why a fighter jet strafed the school last Wednesday. Slideshow: Chopper 10 Photos Of Shell Holes In School's Roof FeedRoom Kids Return After F-16 Strafing The Guard now says its preliminary theory is that the F-16 jet's cannon opened fire prematurely as the fighter was climbing upward at 8,000 feet. The 25 shells went straight up in the air and then came back to ground at the school. Law enforcement officials were able to recover 13 out of the 25 bullets and say the remaining ones were lodged inside the roof or in the ground.

During the school year students and parents were involved in various service projects. Thanksgiving baskets to families, gifts for women and children during the holiday season and a coat drive for needy children. A school wide patch quilt was made by the 221 students at School Sixteen and hung on the front lobby in remembrance of the September 11th victims and heroes. Students were involved in a school fitness program as proud members of the Mileage Club. They also participated in a variety of health and safety programs, and activities that target the cultural diversity of the school community members at various holiday times during the school year.
