    Who We Are
The Statewide Systemic Initiative (SSI) is an extremely competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) program launched in 1991. Over an initial three-year period, 26 states and Puerto Rico were awarded five-year grants. New Jersey was selected in 1993 to receive a $10 million grant over a five-year period, which was Phase I of NJ SSI. The intense competition for Phase II funding narrowed the total number of SSI programs down to only eight nationwide. In 1998 New Jersey successfully competed for another five-year, $6 million grant (Phase II).
The New Jersey Statewide Systemic Initiative (NJ SSI) is a unique partnership of schools, districts, colleges and universities, science centers and museums, business and industry, dedicated to strengthening mathematics, science and technology education for all students in New Jersey schools. Initiated by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJ DOE), based at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and supported by the National Science Foundation, the State of New Jersey, and other sources, NJ SSI is committed to a vision of excellence in education.
    What We Do
The vision is becoming a reality as a result of:
    • New Core Curriculum Content Standards and accompanying Frameworks encouraging districts to examine curriculum and instructional methods Teams of teachers participating in intensive standards-based professional development

November/December 1998 Ganging Up on Youth Violence Schools alone can't prevent school violence. Violence is a complicated societal problem that cuts across all socioeconomic levels. Factors like child abuse and neglect, inappropriate peer relationships, substance abuse, and limited access to healthcare, housing, and employment are just some of the risks associated with violent behavior. Finding a solution requires a united community effortone that brings together parents, school leaders, law enforcement officials, citizens and policymakers at all levels of government. Preventing school violence has become a top priority in New Jersey. State lawmakers in all branches of government are taking a proactive approach to confront the issue head-on. Although their strategies may vary slightly, all agree that the key to treating the problem lies in the development of programs that foster partnerships and tap into existing resources. Governor Christine Todd Whitman has put together an effort that reaches out to troubled youths by breaking the chain of violence before it occurs. Her anti-violence initiative includes a package of programs designed to give parents, teachers, students and school administrators improved resources for dealing with the problem.

New Jersey 2003 School Report Card Database Consistent with prior report cards, the New Jersey 2003 School Report Card is accompanied by a database that can be downloaded. However, for the 2003 edition, the report card database has been completely redesigned and implemented to provide the public with a large collection of data that can be easily navigated and retrieved. The new database has been designed based on the relational database standards and principles. The following are the new features: Each table has several indicator variables (or fields) in addition to the county, district, and school codes:
  • YEAR. This is a variable created to indicate the school year in which the events/status the data collected represents. It is a four-digit field combining the last two digits of the beginning and ending school years. For example, the 2001-2002 school year’s GEPA data has the value of "0102" in the YEAR field. LEVEL. This field indicates the level of the data. School-level data is represented by an "S," district-level data is assigned a "D," DFG data an "F," and state-level data a "T". The selection of the level indication letter is based on the order of the letters appearing in a word. If the words for the different levels have the same first letter, the second letter is used for the higher level indicator value, and so forth. For example, S in the word "school" is used for school-level data, and T in the word "state" for state-level data.
