State Regulation of Private Schools - June 2000
New Jersey
Registration/Licensing/Accreditation: New Jersey law places registration requirements on a limited category of private schools that are not operated by charitable institutions or religious denominations, i.e. for-profit nonsectarian private boarding schools established after 1920 and private schools charging tuition for certain vocational education. This limited category of schools must obtain a certificate of approval from the Commissioner of Education to legally operate within the state. N.J. Rev. Stat. 18A:69-1 et seq Recordkeeping/Reports: Length of School Year/Day: Curriculum: Special Education: et seq Health: Safety: Transportation: The New Jersey Constitution declares that the state legislature may, within reasonable limitations as to distance, provide student transportation (ages 5-18) to and from any school. New Jersey Const. Art. 8, 4, par. 3. Home Schooling: New Jersey does not have a code that addresses the area of home schooling. New Jersey?s compulsory education law states that every child between the ages of six and 16 must attend a public or private school, or receive "equivalent instruction elsewhere than at school". N.J. Rev. Stat. § 18A: 38-25. Responsibility for enforcing the compulsory education law rests with the local board of education. When a school board has reason to believe that a parent or guardian is not complying with the compulsory education law, the local board of education can initiate truancy proceedings in municipal court, requiring parents or legal guardians to document their activities in providing "equivalent instruction". N.J. Rev. Stat. §§ 18A: 38-27 through 18A: 38-31.

The records of the New Jersey Dental School date from 1957 to the present. The bulk of material dates from 1970. The collection totals approximately 8 linear feet. They form Record Group E in the Bergen University Archives. The records are open for research without restrictions under the conditions of the Archive's access policy. ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY The New Jersey Dental School (NJDS) was established as New Jersey's College of Dentistry when Seton Hall University incorporated the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry (SHCMD) in 1954. NJDS was the first program for dental education established in the state. The original school was located at the Jersey City Medical Center. The charter class consisting of thirty-seven men and one woman began their studies in September 1956, and graduated in 1960. The College of Dentistry became a public dental school when Governor Richard Hughes signed the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry Act in 1964. The school became part of the College of Medicine and Dentistry in 1970. NJDS remained in Jersey City until 1975 when it began relocating to the Newark Campus, and completed its move in 1976. On June 5, the Class of 1965 was awarded the DDS degree; thereafter, the DMD program was replaced by an accelerated three year program. This change was maintained until 1977 when the decision was made to revert to a four-year program.

Labor at the Crossroads Summer Schedule Learning To Look Launches National Network of Summer Institutes How might illustrations by Frederic Remington, paintings by Alfred Bierstadt, and sculptures by Edmonia Lewis help advance our understanding of the frontier past? What can students learn from a nineteenth-century slave narrative set alongside J. T. Zealy's 1850 photographic portraits of Columbia, South Carolina, slaves "Delia" and "Jack"? And what questions about the past does such evidence leave unanswered? The study of visual sources has advanced in significant ways in recent years due in large part to the development of multimedia technologies such as the Internet. Simultaneously, cross-disciplinary collaborations among scholars studying and educators teaching American history and culture have improved students' ability to interpret and contextualize visual sources. This summer, ASHP/CML's national network of new media and pedagogy centers will undertake a promising course of study for improving teaching about the past through the use of visual sources. New Jersey Outreach Practices
  • Designed a family-friendly enrollment program which simplified the application process and developed a joint Medicaid/SCHIP mail-in application.
First State to be approved as an AmeriCorp VISTA volunteer project site; six outreach workers provide grassroots outreach to the community and assist in enrolling eligible children.
Partners with many community agencies and organizations.
One neighborhood agency, located in Clifton, that offers travel, immigration, income tax, home-buying, and translation services to a large Hispanic and Polish-speaking population, also acts as an enrollment center for NJ KidCare. This is an ideal location because the residents of that community feel comfortable going there for help with the enrollment process because they can get answers to their questions, overcome a potential language barrier, and obtain other services they may need.
Another community center in Elizabeth offers immigration, employment skill workshops, and day-care and after-school services to the Haitian community in Union County. Staff regularly distribute and produce NJ KidCare literature and speak about the program in both French and Creole, which contributes to their great success in the NJ KidCare enrollment effort.

One place I turn to for inspiration and support is the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory's enGauge Web site [http://www.ncrel.org/engauge/skills/skills.htm] . There, I find powerful insights into the nature of work in the 21st century and the skills needed to do this work—insights that helped us accomplish what we have here in my Lawrenceville, NJ school district. — R.G. Real-World Tools: A Definition "Real-World Tools comprise the hardware, software, networking, and peripheral devices used by IT workers to accomplish 21st century work.
