The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement. ERIC Digest.
Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement.
METHODOLOGY
Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.

In July of 2002, after a long grass-roots campaign, New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey signed Executive Order 24, which authorized the creation of the New Jersey School Construction Corp (NJSCC) and required that "All new school designs shall incorporate the guidelines developed by the United States Green Building Council known as Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED), Version 2.0 to achieve maximum energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in the design of schools."

The Union City school district was on the verge of being taken over by the state. This densely populated, poor, urban, Latino school district with 60,000 residents packed within one square mile had difficulty meeting New Jersey State education goals. Student attendance and scores on standardized tests were below state averages, while dropout and transfer rates were far above the state norm. All that began to change in the 1989-90 school year. A new district superintendent and a new executive director for academic programs were appointed, and, because of the district's poor academic track record, the state required Union City to develop a five-year restructuring plan. As a result, teachers developed a new interdisciplinary curriculum for grades K-8 that emphasized research, learning by doing, cooperative learning, and the reading of challenging literature. Other reform activities included changes in class schedules, with (a) extended block periods in communication and math and science, (b) the elimination of pull-out programs, and (c) more emphasis on staff development. With additional money from New Jersey's Quality of Education Act, the district made a significant investment in technology resources. In the last four years, for example, 775 computers were installed.

TIMBERLANE MIDDLE SCH
Timberlane Middle School: The Future Is Here
Timberlane Middle School seeks to inspire students to make a difference in the world through their thoughts and actions. Our current school theme, “The Future Is Here,” asks students to consider their role as future citizens of the world. Our courses and after-school enrichment programs cultivate creative, analytic and independent thinking. Our community service and extra-curricular offerings promote compassion, care and social responsibility.
Highlights of Timberlane Middle School’s Program
TEAMS OF STUDENTS: Team teaching is the centerpiece of our academic program. Each grade level is divided into three or four teams, and each team is comprised of three or four teachers. Between 70 and 100 students are assigned to a team. These small communities give students a strong sense of belonging and allow them to form close ties with their teachers. The teachers on a team meet each day to plan interdisciplinary activities, discuss their students, and communicate closely with parents.
CORE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS FOR 8th GRADE: These special team class periods allow students to pursue real-life applications of their work in language arts, math, social studies and science. Examples of core enrichment courses include forensics, the stock market and public speaking.

MissionFish Receives $100,000 Grand-Prize from Yale School of Management – The Goldman Sachs Foundation Partnership on Nonprofit Ventures MissionFish won for its business venture that offers eBay sellers the opportunity to donate a portion of their proceeds to nonprofit organizations and thereby turn on-line trading into a new revenue stream for good causes. Since its launch in November 2003, more than 5,000 organizations have registered with MissionFish and more than $6 million of unrestricted funding has been raised. In an exclusive relationship with eBay, MissionFish provides the technology, tools and support for nonprofits to realize a dependable funding source from online transactions. "We believe that generated revenue can have a profound effect on an organization's capacity to serve," says MissionFish Executive Director Sean Milliken. "This award is important because it recognizes the market demand, social impact and income potential of the MissionFish business model."
