82. Personal Geography Bias And Employment (by Jeremy Zawodny)

Personal Geography Bias and Employment
Some random bits scribbled by Jeremy Zawodny I got a call from a recruiter today. It's been a little while since that happened , but some tech companies are hiring again. Anyway, she was calling to confirm that I got her e-mail the other day. (I hadn't.) Upon further investigation, we discovered she had spelled my e-mail address incorrectly. So she began to tell me about this position (not that I'm looking for a job). One of the first things she told me was the location: New Jersey. I stopped her right there and tried to politely inform her that it didn't matter what the job was because the location wasn't appealing at all . No offense if you happen to live in New Jersey, but I don't want to live or work there. It's one of many places I'd rather not work, in fact. Anyway, she seemed surprised by this. That, of course, surprised me. Do people not normally tell recruiters not to waste their time if they know they're not interested? If you happen to be in the NJ area and are interested in being a Development Manager at a second tier search company, let me know. I'll gladly put you in touch. Of course, if you happen to live in California (or would like to) and would prefer to work for a first tier company, let me know too. I'll gladly put you in touch with someone else.

John Reid. "The State of New Jersey from the latest Surveys." From The American Atlas An important eighteenth-century, American made map of New Jersey. This map was issued in Reid's landmark American Atlas in 1796, which was published to accompany William Winterbotham's An historical, geographical, commercial, and philosophical view of the United States of America . John Reid was one of the seminal figures in United States mapmaking prior to 1800. His atlas was one of the first American atlases, and the maps from it represent the best of the nascent American cartographic industry. The map shows the typical inclusions of towns, counties, and road system quite impressively. More atypically, and charmingly, is the inclusion of certain churches, mills, and taverns. A fine, eighteenth century map of the state, one of the first America-made impressions.
"New Jersey." From Jedidiah Morse's The American Universal Geography This map was from Jedidiah Morse's Geography , one of the first American publications of its kind. Morse, the father of Samuel F.B. Morse, established himself in the 1780s as one of the leading producers of American maps. Samuel Hill, the engraver, is one of the early names in patriotic publishing, especially during the Federalist Period. The map is of interest because of its early detail, including towns, counties, lakes, streams and other topographical information.

A "Bite" of the Big Apple
This web site is a collection of short reports and image libraries about the natural history of the New York Bight region. The goal of this project is to provide basic information about the beaches scattered throughout the New York Bight, emphasizing those within Gateway National Recreation Area (New York and New Jersey). Each web page linked to this report carries a theme related to the topics listed below. The web pages can be followed in a chronological order by clicking on the NEXT PAGE web link on the bottom of each page. But first...
Check out the "new stuff..." A Brief Geologic History of Raritan Bay. "Lost Culture..."
A bight is a general term for a bend or curve in the shoreline of an open coast. In the New York region it refers to the great expanse of shallow ocean between Long Island (to the north and east) and the New Jersey Coast (to the south and west). Because Long Island trends generally east to west in relation to mainland of New Jersey it creates a great right angle in the general geometry of the Atlantic coastline. The Hudson River's outer harbor and the Raritan Bay (shown in the image above) constitute only a fraction of the greater New York Bight region. June 16, 2003 "She's a big one," he said, recording data as part of an updated population study. She weighed in at a hefty 232 pounds (87 kilograms). When he was finished, he injected a drug to counteract the sedative. The bear soon awoke and staggered off into the forest. No. 744 was caught in Worthington State Forest on the Delaware River in northwestern New Jersey, in the heart of bear country. In mid-December, she and other New Jersey bears may face the first officially sanctioned hunt since 1970. The hunt has touched off a fierce controversy. Protesters have rallied at the statehouse in Trenton, clutching teddy bears and more than 82,000 people have signed an antihunt petition. Bear Recovery New Jersey black bears were nearly hunted to extinction. But protection under a 33-year hunting ban has allowed them to recover. Since then, like in many other suburban and rural areas around the United States and the world, development has intruded on wildlife areas. Now, bear country sprawls with new housing complexes, shopping centers and vacation homes.
