Explanation of geography
This page was written by Gregory Rosmaita to help describe the New York geography to me. Back to photograph list
New York smokey in distance
i think that the " aerial shot taken from a long distance from new york " may have been taken from carteret, new jersey, which is a vantage from which a lot of the panoramic shots of the skyline are taken (most of the shots of the skyline that are familiar are taken from NJ, for, as i (at least attempted to) explain in a previous emessage, there aren't any bridges to obscure the view. if the view is from the southwest of the island of manhattan (and it sounds so from the description - especially the bit about lady liberty being a cyan spec in the left; is staten island visible? (it would be to the southwest of the battery - there is another, unihabited, island closer to the tip of manhattan named governor's island - it was once were paupers were burried, but is now where you need to go in order to get your car when it is towed by the city of new york) can you see a suspension bridge in the right-hand side of the picture? Stephen: There is no suspension bridge visible. If there was no smoke (the smoke obscures nearly the entire island right down to the water, with the exception of a small section of land which is not built up at the far right) the bridges would be visible in the middle of the picture.

Earthwatch awards 43 educators from 10 states and 10 countries fellowships with funding from multiple donors including National Geographic Education Foundation
The U.S. participants, forming teams with colleagues from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ghana, Japan, Portugal, and Switzerland will map and monitor endangered ecosystems and the impacts of human activities on wildlife habitats. Upon return home the international teams will share lessons learned locally through activities with students and workshops with colleagues. www.nationalgeographic.com/foundation ). Additional fellowship award support comes from the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Geraldine Dodge R. Foundation, the Phil Hardin Foundation, the Maine Community Foundation, and the Rhode Island Foundation. The program promotes collaboration among science and geography educators and provides applied research experience using a variety of research tools including Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). "This is precisely the academic ‘hands-on’ field training that raises the flat map to life," says Stephen Cunha, professor of geography and coordinator of the California Geographic Alliance. "This initiative tackles the dire need to advance standards-based teacher content proficiency in geography and the geosciences."

Labour, economic and urban geography.
Biography
I have two broad areas of interest that I have pursued in my work. My first interest is in labour markets. This work has been quite varied and I have looked at the workers in high tech industries as well as in low-paid service sector industries in the opposite end of the labour market. As part of this, I have looked at issues of unionisation, social inclusion, gender, ethnicity and the links to innovation. My second area of interest is in regional economies. My work has challenged some of the literature on industrial districts formation and tried to characterise different types of regional growth. More recently, I have been exploring the regional engines of national economic growth.

Geography THE HUDSON-RARITAN ESTUARY The Hudson-Raritan Estuary and watershed is a damaged but recovering ecosystem - a home to 15 million people and a rich diversity of wildlife. From space, the Estuary appears to jab like a blue arrowhead deep into the Northeast coast - a 20-mile indent with 650 miles of shore divided between urban New Jersey and New York City. The Estuary - where freshwater streams mix with salty tides - is a rich and diverse ecosystem of bays, straits, islands, rivers, salt and freshwater wetlands, mudflats, and beaches. Its dredged channels, natural harbors and port facilities also offer shelter to the world's busiest commercial port complex. The Estuary's main geographic features (swinging clockwise from its southern cusp) are:
  • Raritan Bay Complex (fed by Raritan River and includes Sandy Hook Bay).
  • Newark Bay Complex (fed by Passaic and Hackensack rivers, and drains into Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull tidal straits).
  • Upper/Lower New York Bay Complex (fed by Hudson and East rivers).

Publications in Climatology was issued originally as a medium for both regular and miscellaneous reports and papers of the Laboratory of Climatology, Centerton, New Jersey. Starting in 1966, the series was expanded to include monograph-length reports prepared by scientists working either at the Laboratory of Climatology or at other institutions, as long as the material covered in the report represented a subject of immediate interest to scientists at the Laboratory. This policy was once again broadened in 1979 when Publications in Climatology became a joint publication series of C.W. Thornthwaite Associates, Laboratory of Climatology and the University of Delaware, Center for Climatic Research. Not only was the editorial board of Publications in Climatology broadened to insure more effective refereeing of all submissions but it was decided to make Publications in Climatology a monograph series available to publish reports dealing with any phase of climatology of current interest to workers in the field. In 2003, David R. Legates purchased the publication rights to
