TRANSPORTATION AND MAPS
Transportation is the moving of people and goods from one place to another and connects one place with many others. Location is an important reason why communities begin and grow. There are many forms of transportation students can identify with and each kind has played a major role in the development of communities in New Jersey. The state's location bordering two major cities —New York City and Philadelphia — and two surrounding rivers serving as harbors—the Delaware and the Hudson Rivers — has shaped New Jersey's role in the United States as a "pathway" of goods, such as food or clothing, and people. In this section students will focus on one method of transportation, the automobile, and how people have come to rely on cars every day. Through the examination and comparison of present and past New Jersey road maps students will come to realize how the construction of roads and highways reflected the prominence of cars. OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES
  • Activity 1 - Students will discuss and brainstorm different forms of transportation people use in New Jersey and the United States.

A state of the east-central United States on the Atlantic Ocean. It was admitted as one of the original Thirteen Colonies in 1787. The region was settled by Dutch and Swedish colonists in the 1620s and 1630s, was ceded to the English as part of New Netherland in 1664, and became a royal province in 1702. The colony was strategically important in the American Revolution and was the site of a number of major battles, including the engagements at Trenton, Princeton, and Monmouth. Trenton is the capital and Newark the largest city. Population: 8,690,000. New Jer sey·ite n. WORD HISTORY New Jersey's relation to the Roman Empire may not be immediately apparent, but its name links it to the period when the Romans controlled Britain. New Jersey is named after the Channel Island Jersey, just off the coast of Normandy. One of Jersey's prominent native sons was Sir George Carteret (c. 1610–1680). In 1664, he was granted the territory between the Hudson and Delaware rivers, which was then called New Jersey in his honor. Jersey comes from Latin Caesarea, Caesaria (īnsula)

New Jersey is divided into four geological areas: the Appalachian Ridge and Valley, the Highlands, the Piedmont Plateau and the Coastal Plain, which covers 60% of the state. Moderated by the ocean, the average temperatures range from highs of 74 degrees in mid-summer to lows of 30 degrees in January. The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region is a mountainous area in the northwest corner of the state. It includes the Kittatinny Mountains and several valleys. The Mountains run parallel to the state's northwestern border and the Delaware Water Gap cuts through the mountains to form one of the most scenic areas in the east. The Appalachian Valley lies southeast of the Kittatinny Mountains. Herds of dairy cattle graze on the grassy slopes of the valley and farmers raise apples and vegetables. The Highlands, also known as the New England Upland, lie southeast of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. Flat-topped ridges of hard rock, called gneiss, cover much of the Highlands and many lakes nestle among the ridges. These lakes are important tourist attractions. The Piedmont crosses northern New Jersey in a belt southeast of the Highlands. About three-fifths of the state's population is located in the Piedmont area. The region includes cities such as Elizabeth, Jersey City, Newark and Paterson. These cities are important industrial cities in large part due to the many large rivers in the region including the Hudson, the Passaic, the Ramapo and the Raritan.
