TOLL GATE/GRAMMAR
Toll Gate Grammar School
Toll Gate Grammar School is a community of learners in which adults and students care about each other, support each other, and are champions for each other in times of need as well as in times of celebration. High expectations for academic achievement, an orderly environment, and playfulness are the keys to opening the door to success. Our school builds a foundation which inspires curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. I am pleased to report that the children in our school (regular education and all sub-groups) met or exceeded NCLB requirements. Additionally, all of our teaching staff members have met the Highly Qualified Teaching requirements.
Responsive Classroom
Building relationships and creating a sense of community are cornerstones to life at Toll Gate. Most of our staff has been trained in the Responsive Classroom. Responsive Classroom is not a program but an approach to teaching and learning. Children’s growth and development follow predictable patterns and the Responsive Classroom supports principles of child development. Our goal is to not only teach our students a strong academic program but also social skills that help them learn how to treat others, to make good decisions, and to become people of good character. The framework of the Responsive Classroom helps achieve those goals as well as creates a warm, caring, and supportive environment for our entire school community students, staff, and families. A Responsive School is a place where children have opportunities to reach their highest academic and social potential and we believe that Toll Gate is such a place.

Skylight Professional Development Selected to Train City Teachers, Administrators The Center for Educational Innovation-Public Education Association Announces Summer Professional Development Seminar Upper Saddle River, NJ - July 17, 2002 - SkyLight Professional Development, a business of Pearson Education (Pearson, NYSE: PSO), has been selected by The Center for Educational Innovation-Public Education Association (CEI-PEA) to conduct its summer professional development seminar on July 19th at the IBM Training Center in Armonk, NY. Approximately 20 superintendents and 200 principals, teachers, staff developers and other administrators will attend the seminar. Throughout the day, Skylight consultants will run six different workshops in classroom management and in reading and math for elementary and middle school. "The quality of service provided by Skylight Professional Development has always been exceptional," said Stephen F. Kahn, Director of Professional Development. "The materials used at the professional development workshops have been so effective that community school districts and schools have purchased books from Skylight to enhance performance in the classroom. Student performance has increased significantly; the results of this training in one case was to place the school as one of the top performing schools in the school district." The Center for Educational Innovation was established in 1989 as part of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and merged with the Public Education Association to form CEI-PEA in early 2000. Composed of former superintendents and administrators from District Four, the non-profit organization provides school reform consultation, leadership development, and support and funding for 150 schools and districts in New York City and New Jersey.

The Issue The Reality 1. District Accountability
  • The monitoring process must assure districts are meeting the standards. Lack of consistency in monitoring: Many programs do not meet the standards due to inadequate time allocations, use of teachers lacking appropriate certification, and use of curriculum and instructional strategies not aligned with the standards. The one-year high school moratorium has led some districts to pull back on implementation of programs at the elementary level. Standards must be accompanied by some form of assessment of what students know and are able to do.

Curriculum Development Childrens Nutrition Educational Programs
Overview Many nutrition education lessons have been created nationally with the objective of providing nutrition education to limited resource audiences. However, many of these lessons have been created for "one on one" programming. Most focus on knowledge gain rather than on behavior change and many have not been created with the paraprofessional educator in mind. In answer to unmet needs, New Jersey FSNEP continues to create behaviorally-focused, researched based, and tested nutrition education lessons for small group programming that are designed for paraprofessional use. During the 2001 fiscal year the development of this website was begun for use by our nutrition education staff as well as staff from other state universities and their programs that work with food stamp participants. The website was developed with the objective of:
  • Sharing what we do
  • Providing state staff with updated lessons which could be made available for use as quickly as they are produced
  • Making materials available to our employees at a minimal cost which enables them to print them on office printers Project Goal
    • To use the website to communicate new lessons to our field staff in an effective and efficient medium which communicates new programming in a timely fashion.
