Expelling Junk Food From New Jersey's Schools
The Eternal Debate over junk foods in our public schools continues. This time, it's the State Of New Jersey that has decided to take action
Junk food and soda will be all but expelled from New Jersey public schools by the start of the 2007-08 academic year under regulations announced by the state Monday.
The new rules will halt selling or serving foods during the school day that are high in fat and sugar. Even portions of whole milk will be rationed.
"We are setting New Jersey's children on a course they can follow even as adults for longer, healthier and more enjoyable lives," acting Gov. Richard J. Codey said.

University rebukes employee for e-mail decrying lesbianism
    By Joyce Howard Price
    THE WASHINGTON TIMES
    July 31, 2005
A state university in New Jersey has reprimanded a student-employee for describing homosexuality as a "perversion" in a private e-mail that he sent a female professor, after she sent him an unsolicited announcement about a university event that promoted lesbian relationships.
The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a nonprofit group based in Philadelphia that is assisting Mr. Daniel in his fight with the university, calls the action taken against him "absurd" and an infringement of his free-speech rights.
Mr. Daniel received an e-mail from Miss Scala on March 7 advertising an upcoming viewing and discussion of the film "Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House." The e-mail referred to the film as a "lesbian relationship story."
"These are perversions," Mr. Daniel wrote. "The absence of God in higher education brings on confusion. That is why in these classes the creator of the heavens and the universe is never mentioned."

New Jersey’s radon activities are conducted through the Radon Section of the Bureau of Environmental Radiation, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Information on our radon program can be viewed at www.njradon.org . The Radon section of the DEP serves as an outreach and educational program as well as a regulatory authority. Outreach activities include a toll-free radon hotline at 1-800-648-0394 that answers more than 4,000 calls per year, presentations and exhibits to school and health officials, Realtors and builders.
    Regulation
New Jersey requires that all individuals and businesses responsible for radon measurement and mitigation be certified. In 2004, 700 testing and mitigation applications were filed, 50,000 radon tests were conducted and 3,000 mitigations were performed. Staff members are drafting new certification regulations. The current regulations will be repealed. Many requirements will be changed for individual and business certifications; fees will be re-evaluated and requirements will be clarified so they can be more easily understood and enforced. January 13, 2003 A Position Statement on: Recommendations for Change Chapter 122 Manual of Requirements for Child Care Centers
    Introduction/Position
Licensing regulations for child care can play an important role in building an infrastructure to support quality early care and education programs. While licensing regulations ensure an “adequate” threshold of health and safety, many states are now setting standards through licensing requirements that raise the expectations for service delivery. Research has shown that the quality of care and education in an early childhood program (serving children below six years of age) and out-of-school-time programs is directly related to the educational background and experiences of the teachers. The Professional Standards Working Committee of the New Jersey Professional Development Center for Early Care and Education developed the Core Knowledge and Competency Areas for early care and education professionals working in the State of New Jersey in October 2001. Included in this document is a Career Lattice.
