RESOURCES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND COUNSELORS
Academic careers are not typically on the minds of any but a few high school students who are already aware of their gifts. But parents and counselors should consider teaching and research as college/career options for their promising students and explore ways to ease the transition - academic, social, and financial - from high school to college and university studies. Here are a few starting points: Both organizations provide information and resources to help members, students and their families think about higher education and careers.
  • Chuck Eby's Counseling Resources is a comprehensive annotated Web directory of resources for parents, students, and counselors, including test preparation, college selection, financial aid, career information, and sources for study skill help. Eby, a guidance counselor at Allentown High School in New Jersey, cautions: "Most 'career' sites on the Web are job-hunting sites. In fact, I haven't found much out there in printed matter either. I constantly search . . . for Web information on this subject. It doesn't seem to matter whether I am seaching for minority or majority [student] information, there just isn't that much."

Bizarre Stuff You Can Make In Your Kitchen
This site is an ever growing warehouse of the kinds of projects some of the more demented of us tried as young people, collecting in one place many of the classic, simple science projects that have become part of the collective lore of amateur science. It is a sort of warped semi-scientific cookbook of tricks, gimmicks, and pointless experimentation, concoctions, and devices, using, for the most part, things found around the house. These are the classics. Strange goo, radios made from rusty razor blades, crystal gardens... amateur mad scientist stuff. If you happen to learn something in the process, consider yourself a better person for it.
