September/October 1999 Making a School More Like a Family By Ernest Palestis, Ed.D. Canfield Avenue School's parent involvement program encompasses a unique vision that meets our local community context. Our program uses multiple strategies that focus on the school as a family in order to build a community partnership in Mine Hill, New Jersey. The parent partnership at Canfield Avenue School was designed to impact academic growth, but it also addresses the social and emotional needs of children and families. On May 13, 1993 our school received national recognition when it was presented with a Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Award at a White House ceremony. During the ceremony, President Clinton stated, "The winners of the Blue Ribbon Awards represent what is best in American education. If we could multiply the schools we could really revolutionize education in America. These are schools producing world class results by any rigorous measure. "We have to recognize the plain fact that not withstanding the funding problems, notwithstanding the inequalities, notwithstanding all the problems of American education, you can find virtually every problem in our country solved ... in an astonishingly effective fashion if you look at these schools. The challenge for us is to figure out how to replicate them."

Sometimes called staff development professional development is the term used to describe a variety of opportunities to continually learn, update and improve the knowledge and skills of any professional. Why do parents need to know about professional development for teachers? The regulations went into effect on September 1, 2000 and require teachers and educational services personnel to earn 100 hours of professional development credit within five years. What do the new guidelines do?

Chairman Paula R. Krokus
October – HIV/AIDS Awareness Month
HIV/AIDS is still a daunting world wide crisis. According to an article published in the Star Ledger (June 5, 2005) this was the year that federal health officials slashed the country’s annual rate of 40,000 new HIV infections in half. Recent reports indicate that the infection rate has remained the same and that there are 1 million Americans living with HIV. The powerful medicines that have become available keep HIV patients alive much longer, before full blown AIDS develops. The government looks at these statistics as challenges rather than failure, since people affected with HIV are living longer than ever before. Advocacy groups say there’s not enough federal money behind public awareness campaigns and other prevention programs. The New Jersey Dept. of Health and Senior Services, Division of HIV/AIDS Services published their annual report for the State of New Jersey on December 31, 2004.
  • By the end of 2004, 32,746 people are reported living with HIV or AIDS in New Jersey
  • Minorities account for 75% of adult/adolescent cumulative HIV/AIDS cases and 78% of all persons living with HIV/AIDS. 31% of the cumulative HIV/AIDS cases are women. Over half of person living with HIV/AIDS are Non-Hispanic Blacks. Thirty-six percent of those living with HIV/AIDS are females. Four of every five of those females are minorities.

Inclusion: Recommended Sites On The Internet
Fall 1996, Vol. 8 No. 1 by Orah Raia Including students who have disabilities in regular classrooms with their typical peers is a very promising practice. Although there are disagreements about inclusion, one research finding is indisputable - for inclusion to be successful, teachers and parents need to work together to plan carefully how the child will be actively included in classroom activities. In addition to being creative themselves, teachers and parents can turn to others who have found ways around the obstacles. For this kind of information and for directions to other helpful resources, the Internet is a bona fide treasure-house. Below are sites on the World Wide Web which provide constructive information on inclusion. Many of these sites also provide links to additional sites and include illuminating articles which can be downloaded. Axis Disability Rights Website
