New Jersey Department Of Education
New Jersey Department Of Education - As part of a revolutionary ten-year-plan, the New Jersey Department of Education has undergone a complete reorganization to be of greater assistance to school districts.
The reorganization will enable the New Jersey Department of Education to better balance its oversight function with its role of providing support to local educators in their efforts to provide a quality education to all New Jersey students in traditional and non-traditional educational settings.
By making the New Jersey Department of Education a more valuable resource, local high school districts will now be able to stretch their education dollars to great effect.
New Jersey Department of Education's new focus will be on teaching and learning and on providing the technical assistance to districts and teachers to help them improve the quality of both parts of the education process.
A major benefit of New Jersey Department of Education reorganization will be the aggregation of all functions that are part of Whole School Reform in the Abbott districts into one division under Assistant Commissioner Gordon MacInnes. To make progress with the thirty Abbott districts, the New Jersey Department of Education is dedicated to better co-ordination this. The Abbott Implementation division will integrate pre-school programs, all aspects of whole school reform, and facilities for the Abbott districts.
Another major change in the organizational structure, which was approved by the New Jersey Board of Education nearly two years ago, will be to decentralize many of the support functions of the department into three regional offices to enable the New Jersey Board of Education to deliver services all over the state.

Twelve newspapers each sent their winning essays to NJPF for judging in the statewide contest, which had the theme "Dear Mr. President." Students were invited to write letters to newly elected President George W. Bush to express their opinions about what he should include in his agenda for the next four years. They based the essays on articles they read in newspapers delivered to their classes through the NIE programs. Several newspapers have published the essays on their op-ed pages or as part of the regular Newspaper in Education pages.

New Jersey
One of the original thirteen states of the American Union . It ratified the Federal Constitution on 18 December, 1787, being preceded only by Delaware and Pennsylvania. The capital of the state is Trenton. The extreme length of New Jersey from north to south is 160 miles, its extreme breadth 70 miles, and its gross area 7815 square miles. It is situated between 38° 55' 39" and 41° 21' 19" N. lat., and between 73° 53' 51" and 75° 33' 3" W. long. It is bounded on the north by New York State, on the east by the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Delaware Bay, and on the west by the Delaware River. In 1910 the population was 2,537,167 (1,883,669 in 1900), the state being thus, notwithstanding its large mountainous and forest areas, more densely populated than the most fertile of the prairie states or the great manufacturing States of New York or Pennsylvania. New Jersey has, in proportion to its area, more miles of railway than any other state, the majority of the eastern trunk lines traversing it. Its farms yield a larger income in proportion to the area cultivated than the richest states of the Mississippi valley. In manufactures it ranks sixth in the Union.

NUMBER 162 THE NEWSPAPER OF EDUCATION RIGHTS JULY 1999 New Jersey Legislature Adopts
Resolutions Against STW

The following resolution opposing School-to-Work passed the New Jersey Senate on May 10. An identical resolution (AR 146) is pending in the General Assembly, where it was introduced by Assemblymen E. Scott Garrett and Guy F. Talarico. AR 146 has more than half the Assembly members as cosponsors. This resolution represents a significant accomplishment by the grass roots (led by NJ Eagle Forum), who worked hard to educate citizens throughout the state. Though New Jersey's plan to make on-the-job training mandatory for every high school junior and senior has been derailed, School-to-Work or "Workplace Readiness" retains strong support from Governor Christine Todd Whitman and the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In a related development, the state's largest teachers union, the NJEA, and two school districts have filed suit to force the NJDOE to ensure that public debate is allowed before any rules are imposed on public schools. STW policies have been implemented in New Jersey and other states without such debate.

Intro Recent Projects / Context Resources Environmentally preferable purchasing involves purchasing "...products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose...," according to the US EPA and US federal government. EPP products can be found for a wide range of products and services:
  • Cleaning products and services
  • Office supplies
  • Food and food-related items/services
  • Building and construction materials
These products or services can be comparatively evaluated according to an increasingly broad and sophisticated set of "EPP" criteria, among them:
  • "Embodied energy" the total energy involved in the product's life cycle
  • Toxicity how much mercury, for example, is in that light bulb?
  • Contributions to regional economic well-being and local development
  • Recyclability how does the product or service use recycled goods or recycle its waste products?
