This document was well-publicized and related how medical errors result in deaths of thousands of Americans every year. Because there was an immediate need for reform, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) issued standards for resolving medical errors in accredited facilities. The impact of medical errors on patient safety, quality of care, and the healthcare delivery system is addressed in this self study unit. The workplace environment and professional practices as they relate to medical errors is also examined. Strategies to resolve medical errors through the standards set forth by JCAHO are also discussed. This continuing education self study material is ideal for all laboratory professionals to have an increased understanding of this initiative and to determine systematic strategies and guidelines to prevent, reduce, or eliminate medical errors.
