Critical Issue:
Establishing Collaboratives and Partnerships
ISSUE: A principal who functions within this broader context possesses the mobilization and advocacy skills of a community organizer, advocating for the school as a provider of child- and family- centered educational and social services (Comer, 1988; Ascher, 1990). The principal provides leadership in forging partnerships with churches, health and human service agencies, and other youth agencies (Nettles, 1991) and sees the school and its principal as leaders in community revitalization. OVERVIEW: Students who are at risk often receive services and help from a variety of agencies. Frequently, these agencies provide fragmented services with little coordination or communication between them, even though such contact could help improve services for the student. Agencies often do not know what other service providers are doing, what services are already being provided, or what information is already available to help understand a student's needs. In many schools across the country, leaders are helping develop collaboration between schools and other agencies and

    http://www.benton.org/publibrary/state/newjersey.html
    New Jersey
    Overview
New Jersey's Office of Telecommunications and Information Systems was founded by executive order in 1984 to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the telecommunications and information technology used in state government. The state's telecommunications connections are provided by the Garden State Network, a leased system. New Jersey is relying on private industry to build its hub on the information highway. Although New Jersey has long-standing ties with the telecommunications industry, its infrastructure and use of telecommunications applications for government and education providers appear minimal at this time. A request for proposal was issued in August 1995 for distance learning, video teleconferencing equipment, and support services.

Scholastic points out students do not need as much down time as previously assumed. They suggest you reduce the number of breaks, control scheduling wherever you can (pull-out programs, lunch breaks, extracurricular planning time, outside interruptions, unexpected visitors), by scheduling solid instructional blocks, and creating smooth transitions between lessons. Delegating routine tasks to aides, volunteers, and students can be a valuable time-saver.

Court Case May Determine How Evolution is Taught in U.S.

    Sep 23 2005 - New Scientist.com
A landmark legal trial will begin Monday that could influence how the theory of evolution is taught in U.S. schools. Eleven parents of students who attend or are planning to attend Dover High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, along with the American Civil Liberties Union are suing the Dover Area School District. The parents claim the school board violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment by creating new teaching requirements that cast doubt on evolution, introduce students to intelligent design, and encourage them to read anti-evolutionary material that promotes intelligent design. A verdict is expected in December.

The two top winners and 10 national finalists will be recognized for their efforts at an awards ceremony on Sept. 26 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
Big (lack of) Men on Campus

    Sep 23 2005 - USA Today
Visitors to college campuses can’t help but ask the question: Where are the boys? Currently, 135 women receive bachelor’s degrees for every 100 men. That gender imbalance will widen in the coming years, according to a new report by the U.S. Department of Education. But the inequity has yet to provoke the kind of response that finally opened opportunities for women a generation ago. In fact, virtually no one is exploring the obvious questions: What has gone wrong? And what happens to all the boys who are not in college?
