Elementary Library Services is pleased to announce that it is a recipient of a grant from the Walker Fund of the NH Charitable Foundation to create a circulating audio-book collection at the two Swanzey elementary schools. Both Mt. Caesar and Cutler will be able to purchase 75 audio-book titles, a listening center, MP3 players, and shelving for the collection. In addition, the audio-books will be transferred to the Swanzey public libraries during the summer months so that students can have access to them during summer vacation. The titles will be a mix of fiction and non-fiction, appropriate for grades Preschool – 6. The collections should be available in the schools by mid October. Library Services Mission Statement The mission of library/media services is to ensure that all students and staff are effective users of resources and information. The primary objective of the school library/media centers is to implement, enrich and support the educational program of the schools. It is the duty of the school library/media centers to provide a wide range of materials on all levels of difficulty, with a diversity of appeal and the presentation of different points of view. The centers have the responsibility to provide these materials for pupils, teachers and administrators alike.

    Summary of the program
The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program is designed to improve student literacy skills and academic achievement by providing schools with up-to-date library materials and to ensure that school library media centers are staffed by well-trained and professionally certified school media specialists. The program is administered by the Department of Education and is the first program specifically aimed at upgrading school libraries since the original school library resources program was established in 1965. Numerous studies* show there is a clear link between the quality of library media programs in schools staffed by an experienced school library media specialist and student academic achievement. School library media centers can contribute to improved student achievement by providing up-to-date instructional materials aligned to the curriculum and instructional practices, collaborating with and supporting teachers, administrators, and parents, and extending their hours of operation beyond the school day.

Paras, the new federal education law will affect YOU!
By Jim Allmendinger
New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg, a Republican, and Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, a Democrat, collaborated on the new law. It was passed by large majorities in both the House and the Senate. The goal is literally to leave no child behind. All students must meet federal requirements.
What does NCLB do?
Congress expected that this would mean that at some time most schools would fail. That most likely includes your school. When that happens, it can have serious consequences for you.

School aid back in court’s hands 10 Aug 2005
Submitted by: Nick C. Publisher: Nashua Telegraph A lawsuit filed by the city of Nashua challenges the state’s new $472 million education aid law on several issues, including whether the proper statistics were used to calculate grants and whether the law is unconstitutional.
The new law reduced state aid to Nashua by $2.1 million, one year after the city got nearly $4 million more than expected, courtesy of a late-breaking change in the grant formula. The lawsuit charges lawmakers with not using the most recent figures for property values, arguing that decision cost the city $2.5 million. Open article in new window...
