New Hampshire information
Mom wants to see mountains. Dad's got his heart set on boating and fishing on a tranquil lake. The kids are clamoring for amusement-park rides. Can this family's vacation be saved? If their destination is New Hampshire, the answer is a definite "yes." New Hampshire offers up a taste of everything most vacationers seek in a travel destination, and you'll find yourself well satisfied after sampling all the state has to offer. First settled by Europeans in 1623, New Hampshire gained its separate identity from Massachusetts in 1679. New Hampshire delegates were the first to vote for the colonies' Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and the state continues to be in the political public eye every four years when it hosts the first presidential primary vote. New Hampshire's natural bounty and beauty are undisputed. This land of lakes and mountains has seven distinct regions for visitors to explore. The Seacoast Region makes the most of New Hampshire's abbreviated, 18-mile Atlantic Ocean shoreline. You'll find some of the best whale-watching opportunities in the Northeast off the coast of Portsmouth, plus sandy beaches, fresh seafood, and New England's largest water amusement park-all the key ingredients for a delightful oceanside escape.

City Pages New Hampshire City Pages: Concord All Cities > New Hampshire is a year-round vacation state, offering a variety of landscapes and recreational opportunities within its six unique regions. The lush Lakes Region, dominated by Lake Winnipesaukee, and the Seacoast Region, with its beaches, bays, and historic waterfront towns, are ideal for water sports. The rugged, forested White Mountains offer hiking, camping, dazzling autumn foliage, and excellent skiing. The "little cities" of the Merrimack Valley-Nashua, Manchester, and Concord-are centers of commerce, industry, government, and the arts. Rural 19th-century New England comes alive in the small towns of the Monadnock Region, and many features of these areas come together in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region, home of Dartmouth College.

New Hampshire, Vermont governors tout bi-state tourism campaign (Eagle Times, Claremont, N.H.)
Eagle Times, Claremont, N.H.
Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News Aug. 4Standing on the New Hampshire side of the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge Wednesday, Governors John Lynch and James Douglas kidded one another over whose state could claim greater ownership of the historic structure. Though Vermont owns only nine feet of the bridge, Douglas summed up the importance of a cooperative effort. "It's true that we only have nine feet, but it's a pretty important nine feet," Douglas said. After signing resolutions supporting a bi-state tourism effort, the governors kicked off an all-day tour of six communities to highlight how the Connecticut River should be viewed less as a boundary between the two states and more as a seam stitching them together. "I really do believe the more we work together, the more it will benefit tourism in both states," Lynch said during a stop in Bellows Falls. "It's not two regions, it's one." For Vermont, tourism revenue could help off-set disadvantages the state's retail businesses face with tax-free shopping available in New Hampshire.
