By Laura Pope, laura.pope@rscs.net Public Garden Archive Though many know her for her colorful compositions of live performance, Portsmouth-based photographer Nancy G. Horton recently expanded her scope as a fine-arts photographer. Several months ago her fashion shots caught the eyes of Better Photography magazine editors, resulting in Horton's inclusion in the mag's December 2001 special glamour issue, Asia edition, now hitting stateside newsstands and bookstores. The magazine is the top-selling photography magazine in India and South Asia. The magazine's editors located Horton and her work on the Internet at her Web site, hortonphoto.com, which also includes a news page featuring photos from Drika Overton's "Clara's Dream." The issue features a five-page spread of Horton's fashion pictures plus a full biography. Also included in the special edition are internationally renowned photographers Patrick Demarchelier, Robert Farber, Sam Yocum, Thomas Zumpano, Frank Wartenberg and Eric Boutilier-Brown. The divergent Horton often wields her cameras at The Music Hall and Hampton Beach's Casino Ballroom. Her work has also been profiled in The Boston Globe travel section, in the American Society of Media Photographers' trade newsletter, and in various magazines and trade journals. She is famed for her photograph of the Exeter-created punk band The Queers, which landed on the pages of Rolling Stone magazine. She just completed a photo assignment for Yankee.

Tamara's Fourth of July Picnic Smorgasbord!
Featuring: Lusty Hypocrites in the Press!
Schmidt and Weisskopf Get Fricasseed on WAMU!
by Tamara Baker Tuesday, July 4, 2000 SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA Grab the sparklers, hide the bottle rockets, light the barbecue, kick back and tuck into Tamara's Fourth of July Smorgasbord! The Meat Dish Oh, the things you find in women's magazines sometimes. Because no one besides women read them, they are allowed to print things no regular "hard news" mag would run. For instance, a recent issue of Glamour magazine had a George W. Bush interview wherein Dubya made just as big an ass of himself as he did with Tucker Carlson last year and this is AFTER the Shrub went through an intensive "charm school" campaign last summer. At one point, the Republican Party's standard-bearer was quoted as saying, in response to a foreign policy question, "I thought you meant some band. The Taliban in Afghanistan!" Meanwhile, the July 2000 issue of Cosmopolitan (sorry folks: newsstand only) has an interesting and revealing article by CNN's Michelle Mitchell. In the article, Ms. Mitchell outlines the do's and don'ts of what she calls "Fun and Lusting on the Campaign Trail", concerning the widespread frolicking habits of both reporters and campaign staffers during election seasons. Apparently, the same highly married reporters who tsk-tsked Bill Clinton for his affairs are hornier than multiple-testicled barncats when the spouse is out of sight. Among the many tidbits: "When George Bush won the New Hampshire primaries in 1988, everyone was so excited, it was like being at the Playboy mansion," recalls a journalist who works for a national newspaper. "The party went on until one in the morning, and I hooked up with a woman on Bush's staff. Only we couldn't find a hotel room and had to drive to a cabin upstate. What a night!"...

Faded Brush Strokes November 1997
In 1929 a painting made its way onto more than a million calendars across the United States. The painting portrays a moment of absolute exaltation: a girl standing barefoot on a cliff before a cascade of mountains; her arms up behind her neck; golden hair billowing, kissed by the orange of the sun; the breeze lifting her tunic-like dress to expose a delicate pair of legs. Standing above a lake, the girl glances upward at a deep blue sky. Her sublime expression captures the essence of the painting's title: Ecstasy . This ethereal masterwork is brought to earth by painter Maxfield Parrish.
Looking at a Maxfield Parrish painting is like peeking into an idyllic world of romance and fantasy, youth and beauty, humanity and nature-where the unreal becomes real. Known for his fantastical paintings and laborious artistic methods, Parrish has left behind a body of work documenting an era when artistic illustrations, the anchor of every newspaper, magazine, and book, made illustrators as famous as writers.
Maxfield Parrish's great-grandfather, Edward Parrish, born in Yorkshire, England, was a Captain in the English Navy appointed as Surveyor General of Maryland. Captain Parrish owned some 3,000 acres of what is now Baltimore, and left to his progeny a legacy of prosperity and industriousness.

A Stargazer's Log
Welcome to a site dedicated to those of us who are afflicted with a highly contagious and very addictive malady best described as celestial voyeurism. Luckily, the affliction is not fatal. I live in southern New Hampshire, USA, where most of our national storm systems pass through and mess things up on an all-too-regular basis. On bad nights I do my homework. On good nights I am out there with my equipment. Either way, I usually post a log entry the next morning.
The focus of this log is to provide interesting, meaningful and timely stuff about important stars and objects parading around up there while at their best annual appearance (known as "culmination"). Be aware however that the most popular stars and objects visible to the northern observer are already discussed in the book Up There and are marked with an asterisk (*) when mentioned herein. Equally important but lesser known objects not mentioned in Up There are covered here.
