NEW! Sharing the good and bad of hospital librarianship at the Spring '05 meeting The Spring 2005 meeting brought together the members of the Health Sciences Libraries of New Hampshire and Vermont in a forum to share the successes they've experienced in their libraries, as well as some of the challenges. With so many creative and dedicated professionals, it wasn't surprising to discover that among our numbers we counted a published author and an enterprising playwright, just to point out two of the many achievements announced. Much of the strength of the HSLNH/VT group comes from a willing exchange of ideas and helpful support from our colleagues, and this meeting highlighted that strength. Also highlighted at the Spring meeting was the dedication and achievement of Norma Phillips, who retired after more than 30 years at Lakes Region General Hospital. Norma was a founding member of HSLNH/VT, and we all appreciate her many efforts on behalf of the group. Luckily, she's going to participate in HSLNH/VT from retirement, so we're not losing her completely! Click here for Spring '05 meeting minutes

Updated August 20, 2005
ALiNUS
is a dynamic Internet gateway to more than 550 online academic library newsletters published by US institutions of higher education. from its inception in March 1999, the primary purpose of the ALiNUS Directory is to encourage communication among academic librarians. The prototype of this active database is the listing provided by the College Libraries Section ALiNUS Directory - Search ALiNUS Directory - View all Scope Audience Selection Criteria Revisions
Since URL's are highly fluid, revisions to the newsletter URL's should also be forwarded to the editor. A Linkbot analysis of this database will be run monthly to ensure the timeliness of the information. It is our experience that five percent of the addresses are unreachable at any given moment. The ALiNUS Directory is searchable by newsletter or university name. Note: Institutions that wish to suggest publications for inclusion in this database should email ALiNUS

A Brief History of Merrimack County The political heart of the state, Concord began as a small unnamed trading post in 1659 along the Merrimack River. A bend in the river named Penny Cook by the Indians was the site in 1697 of Hannah Dustin's famous escape from Indian captors. Kidnapped on a raid of Haverhill, MA Hannah Dustin scalped her sleeping captors and escaped. Settlers increased in the region and the land was granted in 1725 and named the Plantation of Penacook. In 1733, it became the town of Rumford, and in 1765 Governor Wentworth granted the name Concord for the town. Throughout the 1780's state government met in various locations in NH including Concord. Its central location made it an ideal spot for permanent government and in 1808, Concord became the capital. The State House was completed in 1819 and has since remained the meeting site of the largest legislature in the United States. Concord continued to grow and become a trade center. Several industries sprang up and in later years Concord granite was used to construct buildings throughout New England and the East. Concord is also famous as the home of the Concord Coach. In 1827 Lewis Downing, a wheelwright, and J. Stephen Abbot, a journeyman coach builder, completed the first Concord Coach. Together they manufactured 40 styles of commercial and pleasure vehicles as well as 14 styles of Concord Coach.

July 9, 2004 Mrs. Bush's Remarks in Media Availability in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Portsmouth Public Library
Portsmouth, New Hampshire 3:17 P.M. EDT MRS. BUSH: Thank you all for coming out today to see these readers here at the library. I actually wanted to be here in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, library because Portsmouth is one of the 11 sites in the United States that was chosen for a No Child Left Behind Summer Reading Achievers site. And the cities that were chosen around the United States were chosen because they had a very active school district that was working really hard to close the achievement gap, because they had a good public library that would partner with them, and because they had a lot of community support in either business or other community group supports. And so Portsmouth is one of those towns. And the reason No Child Left Behind wanted to have the Summer Reading Achievers Program is to mitigate the loss of reading skills that happened to kids who don't read all summer. There's a any teacher actually can tell you that in the fall, when kids come back to school, it's very obvious which ones have read over the summer and which ones haven't because they actually have to start over a little bit on their reading skills. And it takes them a month or two to catch back up to where they were at the end of school the year before. So I'm proud to be here at this library, because they are one of the sites for the No Child Left Behind Summer Reading Achievers Program. There are 11 other towns and one state that were chosen by the Education Department to be here.
