The New Hampshire Law Library is the only public Law Library in the State of New Hampshire. Its mission is to advance the administration of justice by providing legal information and related services to the judicial, legislative, and executive branches of government, the legal communities of New Hampshire, and the people of the State. HISTORY: In 1716, a collection of law books belonging to the provincial government formed the first state library collection. After the State House was built in 1816, a room was set aside for the library. For a time, the Secretary of State also served as the State Librarian. In 1895, a separate building was constructed to house the State Library and the New Hampshire Supreme Court. In1943, the State Library separated out its legal materials and created a Law Division of the State Library. It served as the Law Library for many years. In 1970, the current Supreme Court building was constructed, and the Law Division of the State Library moved, along with the New Hampshire Supreme Court, to the Supreme Court building.

Six State Centers Approved During the Center for the Book's 25th Year
The Library of Congress has approved a proposal from the New Hampshire State Library for the establishment of a New Hampshire Center for the Book that will be affiliated with the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. "This is a significant achievement to have all 50 states in formal partnership with the Library of Congress in promoting books, reading, and the power of knowledge in a democracy," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "We look forward to the participation of all the state centers in our Third National Book Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in Washington, D.C." "We're delighted to be able to approve our 50th state affiliate during our 25th anniversary year," said Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole. 'The Center for the Book was established in 1977, but the first state center was not approved until 1984. In 2002, we have approved proposals from six states: New York, Iowa, South Dakota, Rhode Island, Delaware, and New Hampshire." State centers provide their own funding and apply for the renewal of their affiliation every three years.

About the Collection home Christopher Marshall, an avid map enthusiast with an interest in railroads, started this collection of map images. While researching abandoned railroad rights-of-way from his home in Amherst, New Hampshire, Chris discovered that historic USGS are invaluable research tools but are not readily available - many libraries have some, but no New Hampshire library has a complete collection.
Armed with a scanner and laptop, Chris visited libraries throughout the state, digitizing maps as he went. Eventually, with the collaboration of Meredith Ricker of the University of New Hampshire Dimond Library Government Documents Department, a collection of digitized maps covering the state of New Hampshire was made public.
Soon the site covered all of New England, and later, New York State. Other map enthusiasts volunteered their time and energy to help expand the collection. It was soon evident that growing national interest promised to expand the collection beyond Dimond Library's New England focus. So, Chris sought a new home for the blossoming collection.
Through a connection established by fellow rail enthusiast and Maptech employee Ed Lecuyer, Chris approached Maptech to host this site. We are delighted to provide disk space and bandwidth to make this unique resource available. Other contributors include Stephen Titchenal and Derrick Brashear. If you would like to help expand this collection, contact Chris Marshall through Maptech's e-mail address: sales@maptech.com.
