Are you interested in your family's history? Which is the oldest house in your town? What style of furniture is that chair you own? How should you care for your old photographs? Whatever your question, whatever your need, if it is about New Hampshire, past or present, the New Hampshire Historical Society is here to help you find the answer. People of all ages visit, write, and call the Society every day. Many are first-time visitors who come to see the Society's award-winning exhibits and outstanding collections that include an original Concord coach, rare examples of early furniture, magnificent White Mountain landscape paintings, and the memorabilia of New Hampshire notables like Daniel Webster, John Stark, Franklin Pierce, Mary Baker Eddy, and Sarah Josepha Hale, to name just a few. Other visitors come time and time again. They are genealogists, historians, authors, students, and others with an interest in New Hampshire's cultural heritage. Each year dozens of New Hampshire's local libraries and historical organizations participate in the Society's technical assistance programs, and thousands of school children benefit from educational services offered at the Society and in classrooms across the state. The New Hampshire Historical Society is an independent, nonprofit organization which receives no operating support from the State of New Hampshire. As it has since its founding in 1823, the Society relies on membership participation from people like you.

LOCATION AND SHORT EARLY HISTORY Mason, NH is located on the southern border of Hillsborough County and bordered on the north by Temple and Wilton, on the east by Brookline, the west by New Ipswich and on the south by Townsend and Ashby, MA. A good part of NH was originally owned by Captain John Mason (died 1635), an English nobleman who never set foot in New England. The land upon which Mason now exists was surveyed and laid out into townships in 1749 by John Mason's great great grandson. Mason, NH, then called "Township No. One" was born on October 16th, 1749, in Dunstable, at the house of Captain Joseph French where lots were drawn by twelve gentlemen and others who had been invited to join in the venture. The terms of the grants were that they were to erect mills, meeting houses, clear roads, and settle ministers within a specific time. The township was five miles square, a symmetrical parcel of hills, valleys, and virgin forests with one large pond.

New Hampshire State Library Chooses epixtech for statewide union catalog

"The state-of-the-art union catalog provided by epixtech will greatly improve services to all of the libraries in the New Hampshire Automated Information System. The web-enabled approach offered by epixtech for its URSA system will be much easier to use than our previous system. We are very pleased to be working with epixtech on this very important project for New Hampshire,"says Michael York, New Hampshire State Librarian.
Since 1985, NHAIS has been operating a statewide union catalog and doing interlibrary loan through a Gaylord Galaxy system. The dial-up modems, analog phone lines, and DOS computers originally used to connect to the system have given way in many libraries to high-speed Internet, digital phone lines, and newer operating systems. However, many users found they had to keep an older computer tucked away in a corner of their libraries to be able to use NHAIS features.
"We needed a system that was Web based," says Mary Russell, librarian for network services at the State Library. "Some of our libraries had to maintain outdated, complicated communication systems in order to access the union catalog."

New Hampshire Law Library Signs Up for Horizon Sunrise

PROVO, Utah - July 12, 2002 - In a move that will automate the only public law library in New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Law Library (Concord, NH) has signed a contract to purchase Horizon Sunrise. The moves comes less than a month after the New Hampshire State Library finalized plans to adopt epixtech 's Universal Resource Sharing Application to maintain its statewide union catalog.
After securing state funding for the project, the library completed a request for proposal process involving more than six potential vendors. The installation of Horizon Sunrise will replace the card catalog system the library has been using since it was established.
Through the use of a well-developed document delivery service, the library's collection of 95,000 volumes is used extensively by judges and law clerks around the state. "We also serve state employees, all the attorneys in the state, and the general public," said State Law Librarian Chris Swan. "Our users include students, business people, and individuals doing their own litigation." In addition to purchasing the cataloging module of Horizon Sunrise, the library will also install the serials module to manage its ever-growing collection of legal texts. "Our serials collection is the majority of what we have in the library," Swan said. "We have to keep it current or it is useless."
