GENERAL PURPOSE Because of its geographical location and its stature as an institution, Dartmouth College has been and remains a focus for research on the state of New Hampshire. There is an obligation, shared with several other New Hampshire institutions, to collect, protect and promote those manuscripts and other records that illuminate the state and its history. The collection, therefore, supports research on all aspects of the state's history and life, with particular emphasis on the Connecticut River Valley and the White Mountains.
DARTMOUTH COLLEGE PROGRAM The collection supports the teaching and research activities of both students and faculty on all levels. Materials are available for students preparing assignments, papers and theses as well as for the teaching and research needs of the faculty. Use of the collection is broadly based; there is no single discipline that is supported by the materials. Manuscripts are used by students and faculties in the arts and sciences as well as in business administration. GENERAL SUBJECT BOUNDARIES Any materials that pertain to the history of the state and its people are within the scope of the collection.

The Bypassed East
United States Geography A map of America's eastern seaboard reveals a lack of large cities along the coast north of Boston. Few major overland routes extend inland from this coast, and interior cities are generally smaller than those along the ocean. This area, comprising northern New England and the Adirondacks of New York, can be referred to as the Bypassed East. The Bypassed East is near, even astride, major routeways, but not on them. Ocean transportation can easily bypass the region, putting it in a transportation shadow that has produced slow regional economic growth and even stagnation. Southern New England is a part of metropolitan America. Northern New England, for the most part, is not. It is much more like Canada's Atlantic Provinces. THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Much of the Bypassed East is beautiful. The Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire contains some of the most rugged topography in the eastern United States. The extensive shoreline thrusts out into the Atlantic and meets the ocean's waves with a heavily indented coast that mixes dramatic headlands with many small coves bordered by rocky beaches. Large empty areas, almost totally lacking in settlement, are only hours away from some of the largest cities on the continent. Most of the Bypassed East is a part of the northeastern extension of the Appalachian Uplands. However, the structure of the area bears little surface resemblance to the clearly delineated ridge and valley system of the southern Appalachians.

... Contributors to This Framework Introduction This framework is based on the significant body of research in social studies education, curriculum design, and effective instructional practices carried out over the past decade by leading councils, commissions, and organizations (see references). The Department of Education is committed to using the results of this research for systemic educational improvement and change. As required by RSA 193-C, this framework represents broad consensus among educators at all levels, business people, government officials, community representatives, and parents about what students should know and be able to do in the social studies.
What is the purpose of this K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Framework? In accordance with RSA 193-C relative to the New Hampshire Educational Improvement and Assessment Program (NHEIAP), the purpose of this framework is to serve: (1) as the basis for the development of assessment instruments to be administered, statewide, at the end-of-grades six and ten; and (2) as a guide for making local decisions about curriculum development and delivery.

Vermont is boardered on the east by New Hampshire, which has no Federally Recognized Indian Tribes.
Vermont is boardered on the south by Massachussetts, which has one Federally Recognized Indian Tribe, located on the western end of Martha's Vinyard, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).
Vermont is boardered in the west by New York, which has nine Federally Recognized Indian Tribes. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe (Akwesasne) is near Vermont, but the rest of the reservations are in central and western New York, about as remote to Vermont as Martha's Vinyard. "Although Vermont does not have any Indian land, we lose tax revenues from sales made from Indian lands near our borders. It would be extremely unfortunate if the problem were allowed to grow. I will be pleased to lend my support to this bill." Gov. Howard Dean (D-VT) to Rep. Ernest J. Istook Jr. (R-OK), June 1997, supporting a bill aimed at limiting the ability of Indian tribes' businesses to escape some state and local taxes. To which Indian lands was Howard refering? How much sales tax revenues has Vermont lost to the Mohawks and the Wampanoags? I know the Wampanoags sell tee-shirts, polos and coffee cups all with the Tribe's seal. Maybe the Mohawks sell roadmaps.

Eighteenth century script is enhanced by decorative flourishes in the title and the map is surrounded by a Federalist style border.

Community Mapping in New Hampshire: Who says 10-year-olds can’t learn GIS?
    By Beth Frost, Antrim NH
After attending Orton’s six-day Community Mapping Institute in Steamboat Springs Colorado, my head was spinning with ideas, with questions and technology. Yikes. As I thought of the middle school kids I taught, I realized that they would understand GIS technology. And I was excited to try. In my current position as Extended Learning Coordinator for a grades 5- 8 middle school in Antrim, New Hampshire, I have ample opportunity to collaborate with others to make things happen. As fifth grade teachers Ann Kenney and Barbara Black and I stood in front of a poster of the town’s watersheds at an Old Home Days celebration, an idea began to take shape…
In addition to a strong interest in community collaboration, Great Brook students (especially the fifth grade) have learned a lot about the mills along Great Brook (an extension of their studies of the industrial revolution). In the short run from the source at Gregg Lake to where it meets the Contoocook River just east of town, Great Brook drops almost 500 feet making it an ideal location for the 23 water-powered mills built between 1770 and 1910.
The goal of our Community Mapping project was to create an interactive link to the web page for the town of Antrim which defines the watershed of the Great Brook, looks at statistics and water flow and identifies the historic mill sites in town. In an integrated project, fifth grade students would learn the basic GIS technology; understand how to use GPS and gain a thorough understanding of watersheds, maps and the old mills of Antrim and finally build a giant 3-D map of the watershed for display in town. Our community partner would be the local historical society, although Southwest Regional Planning Commission, NH Fish and Game, and many other community members would ultimately become involved.
