For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. CHAPTER 6
    THE BYPASSED EAST
A map of America's eastern seaboard reveals a lack of large cities along the coast north of Boston. Few major overland routes extend inland from this coast, and interior cities are generally smaller than those along the ocean. This area, comprising northern New England and the Adirondacks of New York, can be referred to as the Bypassed East ( Map 5 The Bypassed East is near, even astride, major routeways, but not on them. Ocean transportation can easily bypass the region, putting it in a transportation shadow that has produced slow regional economic growth and even stagnation. Southern New England is a part of metropolitan America. Northern New England, for the most part, is not. It is much more like Canada's Atlantic Provinces. THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Much of the Bypassed East is beautiful. The Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire contains some of the most rugged topography in the eastern United States. The extensive shoreline thrusts out into the Atlantic and meets the ocean's waves with a heavily indented coast that mixes dramatic headlands with many small coves bordered by rocky beaches. Large empty areas, almost totally lacking in settlement, are only hours away from some of the largest cities on the continent. Most of the Bypassed East is a part of the northeastern extension of the Appalachian Uplands. However, the structure of the area bears little surface resemblance to the clearly delineated ridge and valley system of the southern Appalachians.

SOCIAL STUDIES Introduction K-12 Broad Goals Vital Themes for the Study of History References Matrix This framework is based on the significant body of research in social studies education, curriculum design, and effective instructional practices carried out over the past decade by leading councils, commissions, and organizations (see references). The Department of Education is committed to using the results of this research for systemic educational improvement and change. As required by RSA 193-C, this framework represents broad consensus among educators at all levels, business people, government officials, community representatives, and parents about what students should know and be able to do in the social studies. What is the purpose of this K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Framework? In accordance with RSA 193-C relative to the New Hampshire Educational Improvement and Assessment Program (NHEIAP), the purpose of this framework is to serve: (1) as the basis for the development of assessment instruments to be administered, statewide, at the end-of-grades six and ten; and (2) as a guide for making local decisions about curriculum development and delivery. As specified in RSA 193-C:1, VI, this framework does not establish a statewide curriculum with designated course offerings, teaching methods, or materials. It does establish educational standards that define what New Hampshire students should know and be able to do in the social studies. It is the responsibility of teachers, administrators, and school board members to communicate these standards to students and parents, and to identify and implement methods to enable students to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills. Curriculum decisions, including overall organization, specific grade-level and course offerings, and methods, activities, and materials, remain the responsibility of local educators and school board members.

    The River and Its Watershed
Many Native American Indian tribes once occupied the watershed and gave the river a number of different names. The most well known Indian name is merruasquamack, which means "swift water place," and is believed to have originally applied to the portion of the river between Garvins Falls in Bow, NH and Pawtucket Falls in Lowell, MA. Today, the river is known as the Merrimack. The Merrimack River, which passes through central and southern New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts, is a vital natural resource sustaining plants, wildlife, and humans.

The Historical Geography of Vermont This chapter is broken up into three main sections Vermont's East and West Unions Montpelier: Capital of Vermont Vermont Place Names Vermont's East and West Unions Words to Know historical geography annex disband Historical geography is the study of places and how they have changed over time. As you read earlier, the boundaries of Vermont have not always been the same as they are today. You also learned how New Hampshire and New York both tried to claim the Vermont territory as part of their own states. These two states once thought of dividing the state in tworight in half down the peaks of the Green Mountains! We also know the towns along the Connecticut River in both Vermont and New Hampshire were much the same. Their settlers came from the same places in southern New England and they shared the same culture. Some settlers even wanted to have their own state centered in the Connecticut River Valley. Its capital would have been Dresden, an old town where Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, is located today. In turn, Vermont tried to
