Robin Bellantone holds that well crafted values, artful living, and adaptation to change are explored most thoughtfully through examples of contemporary and historical art, craft, and artifacts. By meeting and dialoguing with resourceful New Hampshire artisans, she can impart to her students the more immediate and contemporary uses and value of this work. Nancy Brown and Lynn Compton are co-producers of "A Century of School in Peterborough," an original musical theatre production with script and musical score. Nacy and Lynn have helped students to compile and reinterpret the oral histories of past Peterborough students from 1920 to the present day. Marcia Congdon is the creator of a slide show about her experience at the Smithsonian Festival in Washington, DC in 1999. In addition, she has written a portrait of Art Anderson, a folk artist and craftsman who makes wooden toys. She is presently studying the Italian stonecutters in Milford.

Meredith Bay, Lake Winnipesaukee
Photograph by John Mucci W elcome to the beautiful state of New Hampshire! From the heavily forested north country, to its rugged mountains and clear blue lakes, to its historic coast, New Hampshire is naturally a magnet for vacationers. W hen the snows fall in the winter, New Hampshire becomes a true winter wonderland. Visitors from all over flock to the many mountain resorts, enjoying skiing on spectacular terrain that ranges from novice to expert. Cross-country skiing is also booming, with hundreds of miles of groomed trails weaving throughout the fields and forests. W hen summer arrives, boaters and swimmers head for the sparkling blue lakes, hikers and campers seek out the beauty of the mountains, and beach lovers head for the ocean. N o words can adequately describe what happens in fall in New Hampshire. The hills become a festival of fall foliage color, the days are clear and crisp, the skies of the deepest blue, and the lakes sparkle with brilliant sunlight. Everywhere, there is color; in the fields and forests, on the hills, and in the picture-book villages. Yellows and browns, brilliant orange and fiery red, the changing foliage attracts visitors from all over the world to see this glorious and spectacular display. THE NAME: Captain John Mason received a grant for land in 1629. He named this land New Hampshire after the English county of Hampshire where he had enjoyed a number of years as a child.

Related Category: U.S. Political Geography South of the mountains the lake and upland area is frequently interrupted by isolated peaks called "monadnocks" from the original Great Monadnock near Jaffrey. The land surface declines westward to the broad valley of the Connecticut River, and the upper Connecticut valley (known as Coos country) is pleasantly pastoral. Practically every part of the state is within sight of, and identifies itself with, some peak. The climate varies greatly, and occasional high winds and violent storms roar through the narrow valleys. Annual precipitation is about 40 in. (102 cm), with snowfall mounting to 8 ft (2.4 m) in the mountain regions. Concord is the capital and third largest city; the largest city is Manchester , followed by Nashua . The state's only port, Portsmouth, on the estuary of the Piscataqua River, also serves as a commercial center.

New Hampshire. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) New Hampshire, the " Granite State"
Abbreviation:
NH One of the original 13 states (it entered the Union in 1788), New Hampshire was named after the English county of Hampshire. New Hampshire is called the "Granite State" because of its numerous granite quarries; the nickname may also reflect the state's attachment to tradition and its history of a frugal government. There are no general sales or individual income taxes, which fits with the state motto of "Live free or die". A relatively small state, New Hampshire plays a major role every four years in the presidential election, as it holds the first primary election. New Hampshire was first settled in 1623, just three years after the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts. New Hampshire's history is the story of the transformation of a wilderness to farmland and then to a thriving industrial society. Visitors to New Hampshire enjoy a great variety of recreational activities in six major vacation areas: the White Mountains region, the Lakes area, the Seacoast region, the Merrimack Valley area, the Monadnock region, and the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee area. The state offers rugged mountains, blue lakes, sandy beaches and quiet villages.
