What is social studies education? As set forth in the new hampshire Minimum Public School Approval (Concord State Board and Department of education,
http://www.nheon.org/frameworks/social_studies/
skip links
SOCIAL STUDIES Introduction K-12 Broad Goals Vital Themes for the Study of History References Matrix This framework is based on the significant body of research in social studies education, curriculum design, and effective instructional practices carried out over the past decade by leading councils, commissions, and organizations (see references). The Department of Education is committed to using the results of this research for systemic educational improvement and change. As required by RSA 193-C, this framework represents broad consensus among educators at all levels, business people, government officials, community representatives, and parents about what students should know and be able to do in the social studies. What is the purpose of this K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Framework? In accordance with RSA 193-C relative to the New Hampshire Educational Improvement and Assessment Program (NHEIAP), the purpose of this framework is to serve: (1) as the basis for the development of assessment instruments to be administered, statewide, at the end-of-grades six and ten; and (2) as a guide for making local decisions about curriculum development and delivery. As specified in RSA 193-C:1, VI, this framework does not establish a statewide curriculum with designated course offerings, teaching methods, or materials. It does establish educational standards that define what New Hampshire students should know and be able to do in the social studies. It is the responsibility of teachers, administrators, and school board members to communicate these standards to students and parents, and to identify and implement methods to enable students to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills. Curriculum decisions, including overall organization, specific grade-level and course offerings, and methods, activities, and materials, remain the responsibility of local educators and school board members.

What Does the School Board Do?
(Page 1 of 1) The school board sets the vision for the school district and the decisions they make at their monthly meetings make a difference for your school. By GreatSchools.net Staff The word "public" in public school refers to the fact that it is the citizens themselves who control the public schools. In most states, they do this in part by electing a school board ofdepending on the size and configuration of the districtthree, five or seven members who must be residents of the school district. The most important thing a school board does is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting a balanced annual budget and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employee unions, approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools.

The Wright Museum is a recognized resource for understanding and studying the important 1939-1945 period in American history. This period of time is brought alive in the museum through factual exhibits and collections that will help visitors better understand those WWII years. "Check out the tank!" "Incredible experience." "You help keep the past alive." are just some of the quotes heard from the multitudes of students, grades 4 through 12, and their chaperones and teachers who have toured the museum over the past nine years. Tours begin with a brief orientation video, a close-up view of American life from 1939-1945 recalling the character and values, sacrifices and cooperation that won the war and shaped the world as we know it today. Volunteers who served in the military, or lived on the Home Front during the war years assist school tours. Students are given their own "Dog Tags" and "Ration cards" that bring to life the stories of real individuals of that time. Grade appropriate materials are given to instructors with pre-tour and post-tour study suggestions. Most social studies classes visit when their curriculum reaches the point of WWII or before. The E-Board is a hands-on group of dedicated volunteers in conjunction with the museum staff, which develop educational programs at the museum and in

Seven New Hampshire charter schools have been authorized since summer 2003, when the Legislature approved an amendment to the state’s charter school law. One of the first two charter schools to be approved, the Seacoast Charter School in Stratham, will open this fall with maximum enrollment and a waiting list. But the Franklin Career Academy, the first school approved under the new law, will not open this fall. While the commissioner of education and the school’s chairman of the board look for a way to salvage the situation, the two local charter schools, Seacoast Charter School and Great Bay e-Learning Charter School, will open in September with full classrooms and funding.
