Intrigue And Irregularities At St. Paul's Boarding School
The Internal Revenue Service has taken an interest in the elite New Hampshire boarding school . It seems that something isn't quite right:
It is unclear what piqued the I.R.S.'s interest in St. Paul's, though some alumni and parents have objected to the administrators' pay, the school's investments and what they call cozy business dealings. "The I.R.S. has requested information from St. Paul's School related to the 2001-2002 tax year," said Michele Clark, a spokeswoman for the school, in Concord. "The business office has cooperated fully and provided the information requested." Usually, scandals in the

The chin speaks
By Chris Sills Published: Friday, April 16, 2004 Editor's Note: The New Hampshire's Chris Cross chatted with actor Bruce Campbell last week when he made a special appearance at UNH. These two crazy cats had quite the conversation about Campbell's films. Enjoy!
TNH: You have been working for a long time on getting the production of "Man with the Screaming Brain" up and running, what can you tell us about the process of getting this project started?
B.C.: Well, the idea has been around for 18 years. I'm going to be making a film with a friend of mine around the same time, whose idea has been around for 14 years. I've learned that you can't give up on an idea. It's basically a redemptive story of a crooked business man who winds up getting part of someone else's brain put into his and it causes him to reform. So it's like a criminal story with a brain transplant.

International student encourages voting
By Sarah Cresswell Published: Tuesday, November 2, 2004 All over campus there have been many people voicing their opinions about this year's election, including students who can't vote. International student Munevver Cavusoglu, 19, from Turkey, is one example. Although she can't vote, she still has a concern for the outcome of the election.
At the University of New Hampshire, there are about 375 international students, both graduate and undergraduate, according to Director of International Students and Scholars, Leila Paje-Manalo.
Even though they are a minority on campus, they still pay college tuition, taxes, and even pick up on American mannerisms, fashions, and customs as many American students typically do.

Diocese of Manchester
(MANCHESTERIENSIS) A suffragan of the Archdiocese of Boston, U.S.A. The city of Manchester is situated on the Merrimac River, in the State of New Hampshire, and was granted its charter 10 July, 1846. Its population is about 70,000, nearly three-fifths of which is Catholic. There are in the city nine large Catholic churches with flourishing parish schools. There are also two small churches, a succursal chapel of the cathedral, and a Ruthenian Catholic church. The Diocese of Manchester was established 4 May, 1884, by a division of the Diocese of Portland which had included both Maine and New Hampshire. It comprises the entire State of New Hampshire, an area of 9305 sq. miles. The total population of the diocese is 412,000, of which 126,034 are Catholics. Denis Mary Bradley, the first bishop, was born in Castle Island, County Kerry, Ireland, 23 Feb., 1846; died 13 Dec., 1903. At the age of eight he came to the United States, settling at Manchester. His early education was obtained at the parochial schools of Manchester and at Holy Cross College, Worcester, Massachusetts. On the completion of his academic course he entered St. Joseph's Seminary, Troy, New York, where, on 3 June, 1871, he was ordained. He was assigned duties in Portland, Maine, and three years later Bishop Bacon Christian education of children and in charitable work.

I went to St. Paul's School, a snobby little outfit in New Hampshire with an illustrative history and smart alumni. John Kerry went there, and the school has huge amounts of money which it seems to waste on salaries and brass fixtures. Anyway, I belong to an alumni mailing list, and this is a post that I came upon which, seen as a cultural artifact, suggests that attitudes about institutions and the war between insiders/outsiders is being waged on many levels. The contours of the struggle look the same, no matter where you are. As you're reading, substitute 'Bush administration' for 'Trustees'. It's uncanny. I'm sorry, I just don't get it. Referring to the increased cost of legal fees paid by the school, the Trustees state: In overwhelming part, these heightened professional costs result from the actions of a small minority of disenchanted alumni and parents. This small group of individuals has mailed, faxed, e-mailed or otherwise sent to countless entities hundreds and hundreds (if not thousands) of pages of unfounded and accusatory documents pertaining to the management of the School. Words fail me. Blaming the alumni and parents - who as a group represent the sole source of financial support for St. Paul's School, for the increased legal fees? It reminds me of the definition of chutzpah - chutzpah is a defendant who is in court for murdering his parents who asks for mercy because he is an orphan.

Surf's up for summer camp At mobile surfing camp, local youngsters are wave of the future
August 4, 2005 The van is big and white and boxy and looks like it gets about 10 miles to the gallon. It's the type of gas-guzzling anachronism that screams summer camp. But there is something different about this standard-issue camp vehicle, affectionately known as the ''Brickvan" the surfboards stacked on its roof. Its passengers aren't headed to the coast of Rye, N.H., to build sand castles or collect seashells. They're going to ride the waves. For the last three summers, Mark Driscoll, 29, and Jamie Hosker, 32, who met surfing in Nahant as children, have run Boardweek, a summer surf camp that teaches children how to take advantage of the region's surprisingly fertile surfing turf. For $475, campers at Boardweek get use of a surfboard, a wet suit they can keep, five days of surf lessons, and the opportunity to turn their surfing fantasies into reality. ''It's different from other camps," Driscoll
