Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

But, at least in part, Kerry was hated because he embodied the emerging reality that the old insular world could no longer afford to be so insular.
(CBS)
This article from The New Republic was written by Franklin Foer
High school reunions are inherently unkind. But, for John Kerry, the fortieth gathering of the St. Paul's class of 1962 was particularly bad.
The key episode took place in a Concord, New Hampshire, restaurant, not far from the school itself. Kerry wasn't at the dinner. That, however, didn't prevent him from looming over the evening.
Toward the meal's end, the class president, a Boston lawyer named Lloyd Macdonald, rose to give a toast. He wanted to celebrate his classmates who had devoted their careers to public service. As he ticked off the names - FBI Director Robert Mueller; the State Department's top lawyer, Will Taft; federal Judge Alvin A. Schall - the sexagenarians bathed the room in loud applause. But, when Macdonald uttered the name of the junior senator from Massachusetts, the response was somewhat different. According to witnesses, only scattered boos broke the silence. Kerry didn't leave boarding school a popular man. Forty-two years after the fact, many of his classmates still mock him. They chide him for being a teachers' pet and a selfish hockey player. ("What you need to remember," says Macdonald, "is that John never passed [the puck].") In fact, they dislike him so much that they've frequently helped his political opponents. Haven Pell, a St. Paul's graduate and Washington financial adviser who raised cash for William Weld's 1996 race against Kerry, told me, "It was very interesting, the number of the St. Paul's class of 1962 who went out of their way to be supportive of Bill Weld."

Schools for the Gifted
The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. For a private school perspective, read

New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies The Truth About New Hampshire's SAT Scores Author: Douglas E. Hall Executive Director New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies In Association with: Institute for Policy and Social Science Research University of New Hampshire April 1999 Summary of Findings Analysis of the scores of New Hampshire public school students on the 1994 SAT was done in 1995. That research resulted in some important findings that are relevant to today’s educational discussion. Rather than rely on conventional wisdom and oft-repeated phrases, we hope that those with responsibility for educational policy and practice in the state will incorporate these factual findings into their understanding and deliberations.
  • New Hampshire's oft-touted high SAT scores are based on comparison to a group of 23 states, not all 49 states. State average scores include both private and public schools students. An unusually high percentage of test-takers in New Hampshire attend private schools, including elite boarding schools. When comparing results among public school students only, New Hampshire is still among the states that have scores above average. Students from racial minorities comprise only 5% of New Hampshire's SAT test-takers and they greatly outperform their counterparts in other states.

Why Parents Seek and Pay For Therapeutic Boarding Schools
"Nothing else could have pulled me out of my despair."
While some students in such programs are affluent, others come from middle-class families that are sacrificing heavily for their kids' sake.
Research on the effectiveness of such programs is limited. In 2000, University of New Hampshire professor Keith Russell followed 900 kids in eight different outdoor behavioral programs and found that a majority of kids had a "significant reduction of symptoms" at discharge. Therapeutic education industry booms as parents seek help for kids. (Published in the Chicago Tribune 1/20/2004Byline: Bonnie Miller Rubin Todd had struggled in school, had difficulty relating to his peers, and fought a depression that had dogged him since fifth grade. Increasingly, he sought to dull his pain with marijuana. His parents tried therapists and medications. But then Todd was arrested after marijuana was found in his locker at Wheaton North High School. Worse, a drug dealer threatened his life. They knew they had to go a step further.

Winter Sports in NH Mean More Than Hockey
Reported by Jim Jeannotte on Monday, April 14, 2003. High School winter sports have pretty much ended for the year. And although basketball and hockey get most of the media attention, more students take part in other sports. Those include gymnastics, swimming, track, skiing and wrestling. And as NHPR Sports Correspondent Jim Jeannotte has learned, participation is growing. listen:
